The 1st Ditch the City 1/2 marathon trail race in Winder, Ga at Ft. Yargo was at 8:30am this morning. The course is not technically difficult. Weather was around 40 degrees with sunny skies for the 8:30 start. There were several hills, most of them short. One hill just after mile 9 was a doozy but other than that not too bad. I did not have to walk any parts of the course. There were lots of roots as well as few muddy patches due to Thursday's rains but overall nothing severe. We did not have to do any wading.

The race was about a 40 minute drive from my house so it was nice to not have to leave until 6:30 this morning. Paid my $3.00 parking fee and lined up with 316 other runners for the start. The 1st quarter mile is on a paved double track trail and then we made a right turn into the woods.

A few muddy patches, some severe short ups and downs. Around mile 2 I brushed my hand against a thorn bush drawing some blood. The path went up and down gas and power line grids in the park circling the lake. The trail wasn't particularly narrow but sometimes you simply had to wait to pass other runners as well as signaling runners behind you it was alright to pass. Only once did I almost trip on the course. One woman did break an ankle somewhere on the course. Pretty much I simply followed the people in front of me occasionally picking off a runner and occasionally being passed by another runner.

Over the final hill and my time was 2:04:56. I was really hoping for a sub 2 hour but for a first trail run it's all right. I was finisher 166 out of 317, 12th out of 17 male runners in my age group, 50-54. The shirts were nice long sleeve shirts featuring the Ditch the City logo with a frog on it.

That's a great time for a trail run! Congratulations. Sounds like you had fun.

But a broken ankle? That's too early in the season to have that happen to someone. Poor girl.

What's next on your calendar?

Congrats on your first trail race, GRR. It was good to read about some of the differences you noticed vs. road, and your descriptions of the trail, as I have my eye on some trail races this fall.

50K, wow! I seem to remember you saying you were done with marathon distances at one point. Guess not! Good luck Saturday.
