Devil's Chase

Salem, MA

31 Oct 10

In a word - FUN!!!!

6.66 miles - 1:05:26 (unofficial)

Actual mileage more like 6.5 miles

Went up with fellow Trier SS and got there ungodly early, note to self for next year, sleep in another 1/2 hour. The people handing out the numbers, chips and shirts had lanterns on their tables so they could read the lists! Huddled in the car for a while, after all it was only ~40 when we got there.

We met up with Adco, em73 (and Jake) and Cake before the race and marveled at all the costumes!! Elvis, a gorilla (with banana side kick), headless horseman, too many devils to count....thought about bringing my camera, but then figured I would drop it, so left it in the car. I did wear red and wore my daugters sparkly devil horns, but that was about it...there were people running in fishnet stockings! uh, no thanks!

It is a fun course, lots of twists and turns running smack dab through the middle of Salem MA and FLAT! Only one hill and you're up it in ~30 seconds, if that.

There were over 1200 runners signed up for the race and the first mile or so was really crowded, ended up walking at one point due to the shear volume of people. They delayed the start of the race ~15 min to allow everyone to get out of the port-o-potty line!

I ran with and helped pace SS and she did great! Solid Zn 2 run for me and very comfortable.

No idea of where we ended up in the standings, as we didn't wait around to find out (got too cold), and found out today that there were problems with the whole timing system. Official results may not be available for several weeks!

We regrouped afterwards and had breakfast/brunch at Salem Beer Works - YUM!! Great to finally meet Adco and em73!

It was nice to meet all of you, and Jake. Always helps to have a face and voice to go with a name.

I agree that it was a great race, until the massive timing snafu for so may people.

I ran 41:28 (happy on a 9 sec improvement from last year), which should have been good for AG hardware. But, first no time, now a time 10 min slower.

Not that it is so important, but I think any racer deserves to have an accurate result.

Oh well.

At least this year's shirt doesn't choke, right Adam.

We locals should plan on another race and I would love to join you afterward. My wife was due at Buddy Dog at 11 AM to help coordinate a doggy photoshoot.
