Okay, I don't really think that Jeter will sign elsewhere. But things are looking a little ugly between the two sides.

This is a very unique case. The Jeter "brand" is basically synonymous with the Yankees now. But his worth as a player isn't nearly what it used to be. The Yankees have supposedly offered him a 3-year $45M contract. For a 37 year old shortstop with his numbers, that's more than fair. But supposedly he's looking for at least 4 years (maybe up to 6 years) at $20M per.

So which side needs the other more? I'd argue that Jeter needs the Yanks more than they need him. The Yanks let Bernie Williams disappear a while back. Some fans were upset for a while, but they got over it. Sure, Jeter is more iconic than Williams was. But Yankee fans will get over this too -- as long as the team wins.

On the other hand, I don't think Jeter has too much to gain from leaving. It'll be weird to see him on some random team like the Tigers or the Rays or something. I doubt it'll harm his long-term Yankee legacy. I mean, who remembers that Joe Namath ended his career on the Rams or OJ Simpson ended on the 49ers or Willie Mays ended on the Mets or Hank Aaron ended on the Brewers or Babe Ruth ended on the Boston Braves?

I'm a Red Sox fan, and I don't know what I'm rooting for. I think it would be funny if Jeter spends the next few years toiling away for some crappy team somewhere. But I also like the idea of the Yanks caving in and offering him some rediculous contract so that he clogs up a roster spot for a long time, long after his ability has completely faded away. I suppose I'm rooting for the former, becuase if the latter ever does happen, the Yanks could just eat the rest of his contract and go out and sign someone more useful anyway...

My guess is that Jeter is the one who caves, at least somewhat, and takes an offer fairly close to that 3-year $45M deal.

Anyone have any thoughts or predictions?
