So there's a dead squirrel caught in the netting protecting our strawbs. I did my manly duty, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Then I heard that the strange man who was standing in our cul-de-sac last night waving a plastic bag tied to a fishing rod was actually the brother of a neighbour and he was training his pet pigeons. Well, trying to at any rate, training the ones that survived the pair of nesting hawks that live across the road from their house. I feel bad for him, but I wonder that his sister never told him.

Then there's the partridges who nest in the ravine near us. 8 weeks ago there were 14. Now there are 4. Such is life.

Nature isn't always so pretty.

We have wild turkeys on our property up north. We had 4-6 hens with anywhere from 16-30 poults wandering around. One evening a falcon (or some other BIG bird, couldn't really see it) went after them as they roosted. We were so sad. We don't even know if the falcon got any of the poults, but we were worried for all of them, especially when we didn't see them again for a couple of days.

It's not that I want the falcon (or hawk or eagle) to starve, I just wish it wouldn't try to eat the turkeys in my yard. :(

I don't like to see the suffering either...so sad, griz.

As for the natural course of pred/prey:

I'm one who hollers to my family, "OH COOL! Come Look...The hawk got another one!" when he nails a chipmunk or a young robin in the backyard. I could sit forever watching.

I am sort of in your camp Porty, it's just that there's a line there somewhere and I'm not sure where it is for me. The partridges, well it is more of an aww shucks. The pigeons? I do feel sorry for the guy, but that's just funny in a strange black humour sort of way.

I found a dead mouse in my pool the other day. I scooped him out before my daughter saw him. I didn't want her having nightmares about the pool, seeing as we're trying to teach her how to swim. : )

Last year the missus rescued a bunny from our garden and brought him to the ravine behind our house. She let him go with a feeling of satisfaction until she looked up into the sky. Not sure how long that bunny lasted.

Squirrels are just rats with tails. I don't get what their kamikaze act is when they run out in front of cars, and worse bikes. I am scared one day one is going to get it's stoopid tail wrapped in my spokes and get us both hurt.

It does not bother me to see a roadkill squirrel. Or a Canada Goose. Or a seagull (rat with wings) raccoon, possum, etc.

If I see a smushed pet I get very upset.

I have a picture of a hawk calmly eating his din-din with a Magpie hopping ever closer. The Magpie puts up a ruckus, the hawk just lifts and spread his talon, once. The Magpie stopped, seemed to consider things and then flew off.

I had 4 turkey vultures/buzzards circling the farmyard today looking for leftover ground squirrels scraps, I guess.

we have a colony of "whack-a-mole" striped groundsquirrels, who taunt 'n' torture the resident predators [including my sister's dog]

the redtail hawks weren't around, my guess it that the grackles or gangs of redwing blackbirds had 'escorted' them away
