I have a Brooks beanie that I love for both running and cycling. Yah, the helmet fits a bit tight, but sometimes my jeans do, too. Life goes on.

I've had my son try a couple, but haven't found one that he likes. First it makes his helmet fit too tight, then if we adjust it, it's too loose. He claims that he doesn't need anything unless it's below 20*. Uh, it was 17* for our ride today... And, yah, he got cold.

Suggestions???

What about a helmet cover instead of a hat?
Heat's still held in, and he can get one of those earband cover things.

How about something like this:

Performance PolyPro Skull Cap
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=1343

I have the Performance PolyPro Balaclava that I use under both my bike helmet and my ski helmet. I even use it when I run in very cold temps. It's very thin and doesn't necessitate any helmet adjustments.

I use a skull cap as well. You really can't even tell it is there. Mine covers the ears as well.

I also have a balaclava, it just hasn't got cold enough for me to use it yet. Same size and thickness as the skull cap.

I just bought the kid a new bike. He's gonna use it!

Seriously, it was 17* but it wasn't that cold. There was basically no wind. His core was warm but hands and feet got a bit cold towards the end. We only did 18m. So not like we were out there all day. But I do think he needs to wear a hat!

I will check out the Performance hat. I know they have it at the store.

j/k. it's been snowing here since early evening, took DH 3 hours to get home from work. Now it's icing (whatever that means) and they don't expect it to stop until noon. Where it will warm up to freezing for a few hours to snow again until early tomorrow evening when it starts icing again. We were headed up to Columbus this weekend again but I think after his 3 hour journey home, the trip will be off.
like I said it's really nasty but the news made it sound like we were the only one's getting snowed on.

He can either remove some pads from his helmet and wear a normal hat or get a special thin cycling hat. I generally prefer to do the first approach and keep an older helmet for winter use with most of the pads removed. I have one of those thin hats also, but it's not as warm as a big wool ski hat.

17, I'd be wearing a headband under a hat, mittens, chem packs, the whole 9 yards.

I'd just be inside on my trainer. Or possibly cuddled up on my couch with a blanket, husband, and two furry cats.
