A co-worker of mine was out riding on Monday night with two of his buddies. They were on a fairly busy two land road. I don't know a whole lot of the details. All I really know is two of the three were hit by a car. My co-worker is hospitalized with two broken leg, one in multiple locations. <img alt="sad2.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad2.gif"> The other had minor injuries.<br><br>

That's one reason I'm checking with cyclists around here to find the "better" places to ride.<br><br>
When I was in Phoenix, at least there were bike lanes and many of the drivers were used to seeing cyclists....<br>
here....not so much.<br>
Mostly, people use the bike lanes that are there (few though they may be) as parking lanes.<br><br>

I don't think there's a solution to the crazy red neck drivers.<br>
Even if the whole community is aware...one CRND will ruin the reputation for the place.<br>

Even with awareness many drivers take crazy chances. I don't think they understand how fast cyclists are going and how big their vehicle is.<br><br>

I became a much more aware driver once I started cycling. I was almost ashamed of myself at how unaware I was before.<br>

Even up here in bike-friendly OR, there are plenty of crazies on the road....most drivers but some cyclists too who take stupid chances.<br><br>

And, tons of people just don't think - remember driver's ed - "separate hazzards?" I biked to work this morning on not very busy roads, and at least 3x, cars passed me while another car was coming in the oppposite direction - all three of us spanning the road at once. You can't wait like 3 seconds for the other car to pass by before passing me?<br><br>

Do you ever have cars that swerve into the bike lane, only when you are around. Like they dont want you to pass them at red lights even though they arent turning. Or swerve into the bike lane near you, then 100 yards further up pull back into the normal car lane?<br><br>
Or when there is no bike lane and you ride in one car lane ( I ride in the middle not on side of the road when there isnt room for two of us), and they come up and pass you half in your lane half in the fast lane, when no one else is around. Like they couldnt be in the fast lane completely for 100 yards to pass me. They have to pass within a couple of feet of me, with one set of wheels in the fast lane, one set in the slow lane.

There are two kinds of drivers that scare the living daylights out of me.<br><br>
First are those that are probably high on drugs like P (methamphetamine). I never respond to drivers that give me a hard time nowadays as I figure that you just never know who is a drug addled maniac whos going to come back and beat the crap outta you.<br><br>
The second are those people who insist on texting while driving. People, what are you thinking????<br><br>
I hope your cow-workers make a speedy recovery. Whenever I hear of incidents like these, I always think "there but for the grace of God goes me" <img alt="sad.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad.gif">.
