So, I'm closing on my house next week and would like to get a dog. I can buy one from a breeder - but I've been thinking about getting an older dog and have been looking at Craigslist. I am paranoid about getting one there though - How do I know if the owner actually 'owns' the dog? (could have been stolen?)

Is it appropriate to ask for some type of documentation or perhaps take it to a vet first to see if it's chipped?

I'd like to get a larger dog - one that will run with me, but then also one that isn't as high strung as Reds - (really miss him though.. :( )

Advise?

Thoughts?

I have looked at Rescue organizations.

And why would anyone steal anything? When you can get 200 to 500 dollars for a dog - it seems likely that a pedigree would/could get stolen or if one wandered away and found then sold.

I really don't think it's that far fetched.

we had very good luck with our rescue organization. I'd pick an established rescue organization that will work with you to make sure the dog is the right fit over some random person who is trying to get rid of their dog, and who may or may not disclose medical or temperment problems to you.

If you don't want to go that way, I'd check your local shelter.

And why would someone steal a dog just to give it away on craigslist?

I had this discussion with the kennel and my vet when I got Irma. People typically steal dogs to be sold into dogfighting. That could easily happen on Craigslist.
Your shelter impressed me so much I found one here. I blame you for my puppy eating my flip flops!

I'd go with a rescue or pound.

We currently have three dogs. The collie mix we got as a puppy from a dog/cat rescue. The Great Pyrenees we found on PetFinder and went down to a shelter in Kentucky to get her. The beagle we got from a beagle rescue. All three were neutered and up to date on shots, two were microchipped.

Irma was up to date on shots and chipped. I paid $125 for her and it included her shots, chipping, and being spayed.

I just had to take her to the vet because she had the mean stinkers for a few days.

I need to drive up to the shelter and donate some old comforters and blankets, but I'm afraid I'll leave with another puppy.

Ditto the shelter or rescue. The shelter here is very good about getting to know the critturs so can tell people any behavioral problems, medical issues, etc.

Good luck finding a nice companion :)

Then don't buy a dog.

Most of the listings here on craigslist are either puppies or they are giving away the animal not selling them. I would be suspicious if I saw someone selling an adult dog.

They don't sell them - the call it a 're-homing fee'. I've not seen anyone giving any dog away free - puppy or other wise.

Much like a rescue shelter does - they 'charge' for the adoption - they don't give them away - I don't consider that 'selling' - and I'm ok paying. I've purchase 3 dogs from breeders and have adopted from rescue shelters.

They didn't have 'craigslist' back then and I've never used craigslist, but just started looking there because I've heard people talk about craigslist for everything.

Thanks
