Gosh, I feel that with an audience we have to produce... something. Gee. Talk about performance anxiety!

At any rate, one boy is an established runner, the other is athletic but never took to running. He also has diminished lung capacity due to having a piece of his left lung removed.

He wants to run in a half next spring and asked me for some training plans (I had gotten his brother up and running with plans)

While I did coach some people from 0 to half before I was there with them through it all, two runs with them a week and in contact for the rest.

What sort of an approach would you use (apart from Don't Do IT!)

should be no problem. 5-6 months, totally doable. i would just find a beginner's training schedule on RW or somewhere and encourage them.

Have him start out on a measured course, like a local school track and run 45 minutes to an hour 3 days/week. Then on Saturday or Sunday run at a moderate pace beginning from 1 hour until he can do two hours running, with or without walk breaks, whichever works best for him.

Due to his diminished lung capacity I would have him begin by using run/walk and then as he increases his endurance level, cut out the frequency of walk breaks or walking all together as long as he is not having any respiratory problems on his runs.
