My wife has been conspiring with friends of ours. I now have proof and her admission!

This hasn't been a great year for me, stress, health, emotion-wise. Just lousy, despite the great things that have happened with the kids, with music, overall just a tad too much to take. Work, to use a technical term, sucks. But I know that if I am outdoors - anywhere outdoors - for 5 minutes I find a smile creeping to my face. Lately I was beginning to suspect that the missus had started to maneuver things to get me outside more. I was right.

She's stocked the van up with camping gear. She's planned the weekends from now to the first snow. "When the kids are gone we can remove the back seats and plunk a mattress back there. You'll build a box for storage and we can put cushions on it as a seat, and we can camp in it well into the fall..."

When she called up a friend of ours who's the project manager for our organization's new camp site in the foothills I knew that something was afoot. This weekend the two of us helped him install 4 wood stoves in small cabins, and I chopped enough wood to stock them and get them "broken in" over Satuday night, and enough wood for ours. When our friend had departed and we were alone we sanded a deck, puttered around and hung out in our cabin by the fire - all off grid - lit by tea lamps. Rustic Romantic I guess.

We sanded and scraped on Sunday - it's a bit harder when you don't have power tools! But we didn't overdo it. The missus called it quits mid-afternoon and we retired to the falls back in the hills where there's a wood-fired sauna in a very secluded location. The water was mind (and other parts of the body) numbingly cold (numb in 5 seconds), but it was good for the beer.

I ache and am sore in places I'd forgotten I had, but I'm feeling GOOD. Maybe some conspiracies aren't tin-foil hat ones.

Clearly, you married well, Grizz. I'm glad to know the outdoor time is helping, although I'm sorry you've had a rough year.

At least your adopted Royals are playing decently for you lately. :)

Yay for Mrs. Grizz and knowing just what you need.

Although our weekends aren't quite as rustic as yours, our time at our vacation home is the best. There's something incredibly satisfying about splitting a cord of wood and stacking it neatly in the woodshed.
