I have heard of cases where parents had children who were scared shitless over this. People keeping their kids out of school to spend more time with them before "it" happens. People dumping all their assets. Except for the kid part, if they want to be stupid, then fine. Also, people buying expensive cars/etc "knowing" they would have to pay for them. Doesn't sound very "Christian" to me, more like fraud. Don't think God would take to kindly to that.

Fortunately, my kids are old enough to not be affected (other than making fun of it)

Camping, and his money and media blitz certainly was part of the blame, but, as usual, the press had a part in it.

I recall, in '94 (the last time Camping predicted this), it was on the news, for a few weeks, but it didn't seem to be any where near as "big" as this story this time.

Is it the Internet? More news? More connectivity?

It would be nice if the world could at least learn something from this.

But...they won't.

Basically, it disturbs me that one asshole can get so much press and make so much turmoil.

I remember one in the late 70's. We talked about it some in Sunday school but didn't make much of it. I don't remember the one in '94, but then again I don't remember a whole lot of that season (babies born in '92, '94, '96, '98)

I do believe the 'net does allow this stuff to spread more easily. Media also seems to be picking up more stuff. Way back when it was just three major networks covering the same news. Now, with more networks/news shows everyone is rushing in to get the latest cool story.

Also, prophesies do seem to be coming true. You look at the book of Revelation and current events and they do seem to be lining up. That said, no one but God knows the day or hour. We need to live our lives assuming the rapture could happen at any moment or 1000 years from now.

As far as those who racked up credit that they couldn't repay assuming they wouldn't have to, no, not the Christian thing to do.

I attend two churches. Neither said much about it, other than Matthew 24:36 No one knows abut that day or hour...

During a radio interview a long time ago a preacher was asked something like: If the world were to end tomorrow, what would you do?

The preacher answered, "I would plant a tree". The announcer was befuddled. The preacher went on to explain that planting a tree signifies that he wants to be working until the very end, not resting on his laurels thinking that what he's done is enough. He wanted to go up until the very last second working for God.

That always stuck with me.

Mr Aire asked great questions: If this dude really believed that the rapture was this weekend why didn't he leave his money for the poor? Or buy Bibles for those left behind to "be saved?"

I was reading about the finances of his "company". Plenty of $$$ left in his coffers.

Isn't it obvious? The poor are sinners.
