The prep is worse than the colonoscopy itself. Gotta drink that crap, then tie yourself to the bowl

Warning: Men may wince. You are warned.

I had to drink that stuff once in preparation for a prostate biopsy. The biopsy was less unpleasant than the drink and its after-effects. There might be hope however, I might be a candidate for a "virtual biopsy" where they use CT scanning. Seems to me that I might still have to drink that stuff, but the other part would be less, um, intrusive.

 The prep is the real PITA... for women anyway. I had a 7 am appointment so the doctor required the "flushing" to commence at 6pm the night before then I had to have round of that yuck at 3 am. I was so wound up with anxiety and lack of sleep by 7am. They had to wait for the anesthesiologist for a couple of hours for me- the nurses explained that men can have a lighter sedation and can remain awake. I was so tired that the induced sleep for me was great. I woke up feeling like a happy drunk and stayed that way for a couple of hours... so in retrospect- prep is nasty but the procedure didn't matter because I was checked out!

Hope yours goes well..maybe they can sedate you a bit more if you ask ?

Problematic - I have paradoxical reactions to the popular sedatives. They could do like they did with my endoscopy - I slept right through it.

Two full colon-blown colonoscopies for me.
Always clean as a whistle, perfectly smooth and pink...nothing at all...nothing...until...

The last one, may 2011, had three biopsies done which were all positive for microscopic colitis. Even with the rest of the exam showing perfectly healthy pipes.
MC is alovely little issue which can be treated, and will go into remission, but is never cured.

(I'd been suffering for many months with multiple daily episodes of nasty diarrhea with negative blood and stool test results....so the next step was a colo with biopsy.)

~~~ They would not have discovered this with a virtual, just sayin' ~~~
Porty, is this the root cause of your Portie issues in running?
Griz,
Yes and no and the GI doc isn't willing bet her salary on it.
Just trying to keep "things" controlled is where we are now.
She says no Celiac; but I may have underlying IBS (which encompasses a lot!)
I need to go ahead and schedule a colonoscopy before April 1. I have an extra $500 to 600 in my FSA account, although supposedly United Healthcare will cover the procedure. It's been a little over 5 years since I had one which came out nice and clean.
Good luck!! Like RaisingArizona said, the knock out drops make it all worthwhile. That stuff rocks!! Last colonoscopy I had the doc made me start like at noon the day before (apparently I'm really full of sh*t). My problem is I took a vicodin on an empty stomach that night. Next morning it was coming out of both ends and one event would set off the other. I took my husband to work and I had to pull over in a parking lot in the early am (thank goodness it was dark still) and deal with both issues. (I feel so sexy!) Avoid pain meds if you can. Just sayin'.
Quote:
Well, no sedation at first, then we discovered that my colon was a mite twisty and the scope couldn't get around the first bend. Doc suggested sedation because I was in pain. I didn't say no.
Fentanyl is my friend.
At any rate, I have a healthy colon apart from the nicks he put into it getting around that bend.
I hadn't eaten since Tuesday supper so I perhaps indulged a bit too much tonight. I'm going to sleep like a baby though. Work from home tomorrow and not worry too much about being sociable.
DW has had numerous ones in the past. They are never pleasant for her. Both of her parents are Colon Cancer Survivors!
I had mine done in Oct of 2010. I hated the prep but was fascinated with the screen in front of me that allowed me to watch the scope travel my colon. Coolio!
No deep-sleep pain meds must make it miserable, Griz.
Glad you're Healthy.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting knocked out, and not being aware of anything while the doc went spelunking.
Yeah, glad I stayed home today. It was kinda cool actually. Seeing the place where my appendix used to be.... 46 years ago. Because it was in a clinic they don't give the complete sedation so when I did get some fentanyl it was just enough to get me past the point of pain when he roto-rooted around the bend. TMI?
My colonoscopy mantra-Nott fun , BUTT must be done!
