<span style="color:#000000;"><b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">1. Why do you run?</span></b></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">In March 2005 I was overweight and otherwise in poor health. I had a physical that month and the doctor gave me a laundry list of medications that I’d need to start taking if I didn’t turn things around quickly. He also told me that, unless I started exercising and losing weight that I’d likely die up to 20 years earlier than I otherwise would. Since I had been an athlete for most of my life, this came as quite a shock. I used to run in HS, so I thought that I’d give that a try again. The first day on the treadmill was torture – one mile in 10 minutes. I had to take the next day off because I was so wiped out. I stuck with it however and six months later I had lost approximately 60 pounds and completed my first half marathon. My doctor was absolutely amazed at my physical transformation. Fortunately for me the doomsday scenario that he had described never came to pass.</span></span><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Since then I’ve lost another 10 pounds and I no longer feel like I’m running exclusively for my health. I’ve recaptured my competitive side from my high school track and cross country days and now I run more for the competition.</span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>2. What is your greatest accomplishment?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Running – Earning my first trip to Boston, several pacing gigs with my fellow KRs.</span></span></span><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Professionally – passing the bar exam.</span></span></span><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Personal – Raising two great children.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>3. What is your motto/theme song?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Pain is temporary pride is forever. I’ve been using that one since high school. To me it means that success means never taking short cuts. You always need to put in your best effort no matter how difficult that might be because you’ll always be happier with the result when you do.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>4. How do you deal with bad runs?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I try to determine the cause. In retrospect there’s almost always an obvious reason for a bad run. It could be poor nutrition or hydration, improper sleep the night before, high stress levels, overtraining, injury or many, many other things. Once I identify what went wrong, I try to correct that for my next run.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Not really. They’re all supposed to be good runs.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>6. Who do you admire most?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I started to type out a list, but then it got ridiculously long. Suffice it to say that there are a lot of people in this world that are worthy of admiration – including a lot of you here on KR.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">My grandmother always told me, “Don’t talk about doing great things. Do them."</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>8. What do wish you had learned younger?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Not to worry about what other people think of you. I wasted a lot of time when I was younger doing things that I thought would cause others to like me. I’ve found that it’s much less stressful just being yourself.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>9. What do you wish you could do but can't?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Time travel. Maybe science will make that possible one of these days.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>10. How would your friends describe your personality?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Sarcastic, funny, smart, impulsive, ambitious, hard-working, loyal.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I wear a wicking shirt and shorts down to about 35 degrees. Below 45 and the t-shirt becomes a long sleeved shirt. Below 35 degrees – switch to tights and add a light jacket. Below 20 degrees – thicker tights, long-sleeved Under Armor compression top, windproof jacket, gloves, hat. And sunglasses. I almost always wear sunglasses – even on cloudy days.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>12. What has been your favorite race?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">The Skunk Cabbage Classic Half Marathon. It’s a small, local race that’s held in early April by the Finger Lakes Running Club in Ithaca, New York. I grew up just down the road from Ithaca, so running that race makes me feel as though I’m returning to my running roots. That may explain why I’ve PRed there every year too.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>13. Do you have a goal race right now?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I'm running</span></span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Boston</span></span> <span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">baby!!!</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>14. What makes you happy?</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Lazy days at home with my family, hiking, a great long run, a good cup of coffee, traveling to new destinations, spending time with friends.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.</b></span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I’m a pretty good singer. Back in high school I was selected for the all-New York state and all-Northeastern states choirs. I was also offered full scholarships to several music schools, including The Eastman School of Music. Just don’t ask me to sing now. Singing is a lot like running. You have to keep practicing if you want to remain any good at it and I haven’t sung a note in almost 20 years.</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Ok, that was kind of boring. How about this? In college I earned by beer money as a certain type of “donor.”</span></span></span><br><br><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><b>16. Very nice to get to know you, Mr. CoachT.<br><br>
I love what your grandmother said and I think that little secret about you falls in line with what your grandmother was thinking. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Very Happy">
