1. I will be civil in my public discourse and behavior.

2. I will be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them.

3. I will stand against incivility when I see it.

Apparently only 3 members of Congress have, so the effort is ramped down.

Good point. But why do you folks pledge allegiance to a flag and to the republic for which it stands if you already live that way?

In my mind, it's because the pledge is something far more meaningful that unites a populace. The patriotism, the remembrance of what it took to get to this place happens every time I pledge. I love this country like no other.

A pledge to behave civilly is tantamount to saying: I pledge to breathe, eat, and sleep today.

civility - politeness or courtesy, esp when formal

Not a problem for me really- I try to live that way anyway- Mom and Dad required it .

For a politician not to take that pledge? iNitially I thought that it was too bad ...but actually by not taking it they are being forthright. Politics is a nasty sport. They deal and bargain all the time .. I may not like that but that it is a fact that this is how politics work. We all know that so it would really be a meaningless pledge for most anyway.

I already do that.

The problem is that "civil" means something different to different people. So, my idea of civility may be not using foul language, calling names, implying "stuff", or being snarky and underhandedly calling someone a dumb-shit.... but to someone else, civility may mean something similar, but different..... It may be ok for them to be snarky and underhanded in calling someone a dumbshit, but as long as they don't actually say it, they're in the clear.

The best example I can give is to go look back through all the drama threads from last year (or was it actually longer ago now). Whether or not people were being civil back then depends on your personal standard for "civil."

In general, I live my life being civil to everyone, but, I probably wasn't always in those threads according to my personal standard. BUT, if you are one that has a different standard than I do, you may think I was perfectly civil. It's really very subjective and a HUGE grey area.

idk.... I'm not good at explaining. BUT, because of the different personal standards, I'd have to decline taking the pledge.

The two scary (obvious) questions to that are:

What is determined to be civil or not.

Who determines the above.

Political correctness leading to Animal Farm ("some are more equal than others"). Be vewy afwaid.
