The short version is at the end.

The corporate cup is a team event where they give awards for the most participants from a company and you can make teams for mens, women's mixed and then they score you. You race against other teams in the same industry.

Well it was my first race in almost a month. I had no clue how I was going to do. It is APril in Florida so you can guess the weather. Warm and humid. my truck said 85 degrees at 6:15 pm My goal time was 22 flat but now I was wondering if I could keep it under 23.

I took about an 8 minute warm up jog and it didn't help my legs loosen up at all. I was starting to dread the race. I found a spot in the crowd and waited. The gun went off and I started the normal weave around the walkers etc that always want to start at the front. I finally got out of most of the pack and tried to maintain a solid pace. I went through the first mile feeling okay.

As we made our way out to the turn around point I still felt okay. I grabbed a cup of water drank part and threw the rest on my head. Heading back the wind died/disappeared. I was starting to feel tired and I thought i was holding pace okay.

I worked my way back to the start and finish areas and I was more or less hanging with the same group of people. A few people were passing me and I caught 1 or 2 people. I was trying not to think about how much distance was left and just finish the course. My legs were tired, I was sweating like crazy and I was just waiting to finish and find the beer!!!
(I love beer races!)

I came up on Mile 3 and I was really starting to hurt. I heard a beep of someone elses watch and i look over and it is one of the guys from work that i know. So now I have a real reason to kick it in. We both start kicking for the finish and I was matching him stride for stride, my lungs burned, my stomach hurt my body hurt. I tried to find another gear to beat him but I had nothing left. He was able to find another gear with about 50 yards to go and beat me to the finish line by a few strides. OH well.

I cross the finish line stop my watch and the dry heaves start. I have 2 nice stomach lurches and I thought i was safe. Then as I started walking forward I had another strong heave and I was on my knee leaving a small puddle on the side of the finishing pit where they were taking the timing chips off of the people who rented them. I get back up, wipe my lips with my hand and walk off to find the water.

I grab 2 cups of water and head to the beer cart. I grab 2 and finally relax. After a few minutes more of my friends from work show up and more beers are consumed.

Finally after about an hour they start announcing the results. It turns out that BCBSF wins the award for most participants, First Place in the Mens Insurance Division (I was part of that team), First Place in the Women's Insurance Division and First place in the Mixed Insurance Division. This was the first time we had pulled this off. We usually ended up winning 2 out of the 4.

Since I was the one that literally left part of my self in the course they sent me up to get our plaque for the 1st place in Mens Insurance.

My splits were:
Mile 1: 1.04 in 6:40 (6:25),
Turn around: .46 in 2:59 (6:29),
Mile 2:
.57 in 4:02 (7:09),
Mile 3: 1.08 in 7:17 (6:44),
Final .10: 0 feet?? 35 seconds.
My watch had me at 21:34 but the chip time was 21;26.
According to the scoring I tied the guy from work and they even put me ahead of him in placing?? even though he was about 5 strides in front of me. Oh well.
Place = 67/~700 males

Last night was my fastest race in April ever.

A picture from before the race and 2 from after the race are at:

http://purduejax.org/currentrun.html

I admire your ability to race in the heat and humidity. I couldn't do it.

I have 1 month to cut 90 seconds off of my 5K time. I don't know if I can do it. It just gets to hot in Late May Early june for me to run fast. I am just fast enough to get to the beer line before the real lines start.
