We used to have several when I was a kid. They're a neat critter to have. If they are handled often they will be tame, but if neglected, not so great. They can have a nasty bite.

One thing to remember is that they are mostly nocturnal sooooooo....noisy at night. They need a fairly large enclosure to allow them to bounce around, and I mean bounce. They'll run laps arond the sides and even off the roof. We used a fairly large bird cage. They also like to squeak really loud..usually around 3 AM or so. Enough to sit you upright in bed wondering what the hell is happening.

They like to bath in volcanic ash which can be purchased at stores that sell the chinchillas. They'll spin in it creating a dust storm.

They were a fun pet to have.

We have a nice large cage, and he mentioned that he is getting a dust bath, so we are set for those accommodations...

All of our guinea pigs have passed away.

Mr. altoids is opposed to rats, for some reason. Because they are rat-like, I suppose?

I thought the chinchilla was part of the rodent family?

It's illegal to own a rat in Alberta. They confiscate the thing and give you a 5000.00 fine.

yes, chinchillas are in the rodent family, but more closely related to rabits.

I personally HATE chinchillas. Most of them are evil, they are loud, and shead like no one's business (they have 70+ hairs/follicle whereas we only have one or two. hair that comes out EXTREMELY easily is thier main defense mechanism). We have two that I handle at the zoo and they are pretty much a pain in the ass--you need to handle them often so they are used to being manipulated, but they are really skittish and on more than one occasion, I have almost had it leap out of my hands. or pee on me, which is just awesome...

and they require dust baths for cleaning themselves. you have to buy lava dust (or special dust bath stuff) and let them roll around in it. then they shake off all the oil/dirt/etc. then you get to clean it up. and they require a fairly large enclosure.

go get a cat or a dog from the shelter. seriously. or even a rabbit. chinchillas suck as pets.

crazyfrog: I already said yes. Our family already has pets (dog and 2 cats) that were adopted/rescued. My son specifically wanted a chinchilla. So here we go...

Nope. Alberta is supposedly "Rat free" We even have a Rat Patrol the specifically hunt down any rat sightings. I've lived in Alberta all my life and have yet to see a rat.
