Specifically, which race?

The Magellan Development Spring Half Marathon in May is an out and back on the lakefront path starting on the south lakeshore. There are many viewing options... just pick a place on the path. The turnaround is at the Museum Campus in Grant Park, i.e. by downtown. No so great viewing if they want to meet up after since they'd have to be at the start/finish area all the time.

The August Rock'n'Roll HM starts out in Grant Park and heads into the Loop before going south on LSD. Check the course map for spots in the Loop

However, the race we call the Chicago Half is on Sept 11th this year. Starts and ends around the Museum of Science and Industry (south lakeshore) . Either side of the museum you can see the runners multiple times without actually going too far.

As for the other HMs in the city, no idea.

I'm assuming it's the one in May, as she said it's coming up soon. So if she's wanting to cheer on somewhere in the middle, she's going to have trouble at the finish? Any suggestions on parking?

Looks like got my HMs mixed up. I was thinking of the 13.1 series race, which is on the south shore. For the race in May, the start and finish is not where I thought it was. It's just north of Grant Park, which is good news for your friend. Here's the course map: http://www.chicagospringhalf.com/pdf/course_map.html. You'll have to zoom in.

In this case they could watch, say by Buckingham Fountain or down by the Museum Campus (miles 2, 3) and then walk up to the finish line with plenty of time to spare.

Parking - I always go to Monroe East, which is accessed via lower Columbus between Randolph and Monroe. The Randolph side of this underground lot is closest to the start / finish area. http://www.millenniumgarages.com/garages/east-monroe-street-garage.aspx
