Maybe I should be posting this in the med tent, but here goes: My son has taken up running and loves it. He'll soon be 18, in good shape, not overweight, etc. When he runs, however, he ends up w/ sharp pains in his chest, right along his sternum. It starts while he is running, but gets worse when he stops. The pain is sometimes toward the bottom of his rib cage. Pain usually doesn't last more than 15 minutes after the run. I am stumped....I've run for years and haven't experienced this....anyone have a clue what this could be? Something to do with breathing maybe? Thanks!!!!!

Sounds like he could possibly have a hairline rib fracture. Mention it to his doctor and see if perhaps he'll recommend a heart stress test to see if they can duplicate the problem while he is under medical observation.

Probably something minor but worth having a doctor (preferably a doctor who runs) check him out.
