Hey Richard,

If you have gaiters, wear them... they are great for deep snow. Even a minimal gaiter like the Dirty Girls are better than nothing. If not, your feet will probably get wet, especially if it's heavy wet snow. If it's new snow, you may not even need traction, unless it's steep hilly terrain. The Hardrocks are good in that stuff since they are somewhat water resistant. You are right, they seem to run a tad small.

I usually just plan to get wet, then run and get wet, then change into dry stuff at the car afterwards. It kinda sucks, but running through fresh snow is fun too! It becomes miserable once it gets all lumpy, icy, and tracked up.

Those heel cups are a double-edged sword. They hold your foot nice and solid, but they can cause problems on really long climbs. I got a pretty good case of Haglund's Deformity from running up Pikes Peak 3 times in 2 weeks last summer. It was quite painful and really limited my running for a few weeks. Now I try to wear a shoe with less of a heel cup on stuff that has a lot of climbing.

http://www.footphysicians.com/footan...-deformity.htm

The Dirty Girl gaiters are really sweet, btw. Obnoxious colors and patterns, but really great gaiters!

http://www.dirtygirlgaiters.com/
(her website is pretty out of control too!)
