This report in memory of Michael DeRobertis, who got me off the ground and running 3 years ago. Thank you, Michael!

It was a dark and foggy morning.
I blasted my PR -- it was my wilda$$ 2008 half marathon goal -- by just one second.

Easy peasy goal: sub 2 (yawn)
Feasible goal: PR, sub 1:56:28
Secret goal: Beat Tamster's 1:53?
Wild goal: 1:51:00. Dare to dream!
Off the charts Ya Right : sub-1:50

I drove 1.5 hours to the pretty and tiny hamlet of Turner Oregon. Clad in only a running skirt and a loud, short-sleeved biking shirt*, I set off amongst a crowd of 500 or so. I saw 2 guys in shorts. It was about 33 degrees, no wind, in pretty dense fog. Joe Henderson remarked later that he thought we got extra oxygen from the fog (I believe it!). These kind of conditions are why the PNW is such a great place to race.

The only drawback to the course was the cambered roads and many turns. It was a choice -- do I veer off to cut to the tangent on each of the many corners, or keep to the center, where the road is more flat?

Goal pace was 8:45; solidly a PR pace.
mile 1 8:19 too fast!
8:20 too fast! (alarm, alarm)

My friend Patricia, whom I normally sail past halfway through in our races, set a shockingly fast pace. I listened to myself and decided that what I was running was my "happy pace" and not to worry.

8:44
8:31 passed Patricia
17:07 2 miles, avg 8:34
---halfway point = 55:40
8:19
8:27 (ate a hammergel...you know bike shirts have these great pockets?)
7:59 felt strong!
8:15 thumbs-up sign to a group of cyclists got me some cheers
8:17 charge!
8:08 passing more people!
:54 hang on for dear life...might actually go sub 1:50!

end = 1:49:59 (2nd half = 54:15; negative split)
web results say 1:50:00.4, but I lost 5 seconds at the start. Watch says 1:49:55

No age group glory (4th/19) -- this fast course attracts the speedy. I am THRILLED! I can't come down from the ceiling!

Wow. Terrific race.
The negative split shows that you are both in very good shape and highly disciplined.
A great way to start the new year.

What a thrill to run a breakthrough race like that! I am very happy for you. (I didn't even know you were racing this weekend.)

There is a disturbing lack of photographic evidence here.

Yes, take the tangents.
