This was a goal race for me, and I achieved my goals. I read, thought long and hard about pacing strategy, and it paid off. I had 14 marathons and an ultra under my belt, coming off a streak of 7 of those marathons and the ultra in the twelve months ending in October. After a couple of good 5k's during the holidays, my cup of confidence was running over. I wanted to run the first half in about 2:08:30 and the second half in about 2:11:00, a very ambitious PR attempt. My last PR was in May, 2007 in Olympia, Washington at the Capital City Marathon, which was also a hilly course-4:45:20.

My family went with me for a change, and we had a wonderful trip. Before heading to the Expo Saturday, we went whale watching and got some good looks at a medium-sized gray whale, as well as sea lions and pelicans. We had a big pasta dinner with the Master's Club runners and family.

I was up at 4:43, two minutes before the alarm. As is customary, I met up with a couple of the Club at the start line, SLOjim and Dove. Jim gave me a bar to eat because I was hungry and worried I would run out of fuel, even though I had two ShotBlok packages in my pocket. We found Dove, who had wisely talked me into the early start. We said goodbye to Jim because he was running the half, and off we went on the nice, small early start about 6:30.

Dove ran much of the first half with me, which was a huge help. Right after that, I saw my family cheer me on at the hotel, which was a huge help, but made me feel some pressure to do well in the second half, which is always tough. You can see from the chart I've attached that there were still some hills left although the steepest were out of the way. I stopped at mile 20 for the potty and lost a couple of minutes. Oops-I blew the 10:00 pace I had going, the best 20 miles I had ever ran by far. At mile 25, I could feel a grin coming over my face. I came flying down the hill, passing lots of people and yelled, "This is the best part!" Actually the best was yet to come in just a few minutes from the cheering finish line crowd. Maybe they thought I took the regular start and ran a 3:31. Not Dove. She was there with her boyfriend and they cheered me on, causing others to cheer my name. Could they see from my smile and stride that I got a 14-minute PR? "You guys are the greatest!" I yelled.

There's a lot more I could say about the rest of the weekend and how great it was, but I'll stop. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

ETA-I had this great-looking sweater that was buried in a drawer at home for some reason. When I got warm at about mile 3, I decided to pitch it aside for a homeless person.

Congratulations on your PR!!!! Everyone says "you aren't going to PR at Carlsbad"... you proved them wrong!

I think I know why you did so well...... I'm sure it was that lucky sweater you started the race with..... I hope you didn't throw that away

I was anxious to know your time, so I peeked at the marathon site and pulled up your results and was so happy for you!!! and now reading this report and the emotion behind it just makes it all the sweeter!! You are running so well Opie! I hope I can enjoy my first marathon like you obviously enjoyed this one. Sounds like it was a very worthwhile trip and icing on the cake to have your family there to enjoy the moment with you!

Wow, 14 minutes! That's impressive, especially on a hilly course. It's so cool when everything comes together like that. Congratulations, MM Opie!

Surely you have some pictures of you and the other KR Carlsbad runners?

PS: Time to update that profile.

I did the same as Tamster and peaked at the results Sunday evening. I knew you were going to PR from our runs together, I just didn't know by how much. Congratulations on a great race and I am looking forward to a more detailed debriefing when we get together for a run. Also, looking forward to pictures and the rest of the FE RR's & pictures.

I do have a few pictures just before the race.... but I may have to get permission from Mrs. Opie to post them...... she told Opie she never wanted to see that lucky sweater again.

Awesome job, Opie. Congrats on your 14 minute PR. I also peeked at your results on Sunday night and have been lurking off and on, waiting for your report.

You seem to do well on hills, maybe you should concentrate only on hilly races . I'm waiting for some pictures too. Sorry I missed the race and pre-race meet up, especially since it sounds like everyone had a great time. So, what's next?? Hey I like the new RC avatar.

Wow, Opie! Thanks for making my weekend in Carlsbad a great one. Our constant chatter made those first hills just melt away under my feet and as a result I felt very strong the second half. Mr. Dove (oops, I mean MR. HAWK) and I loved the reaction of the crowd when we started yelling your name, but you forgot to report on one special moment:

Just as Opie was rounding the corner for his final, victorious sprint to the finish, a large group of ALS team walkers decided to join hands and march across the finish together. What was a clear path for a 100 yard dash became a sea of red shirts stretching across the road. There must have been 40 walkers, joined hand-in-hand. I turned to Mr. Hawk and we both said "poor Opie, there's no way around them!" But just as quickly as we said that, the shirts parted like the Red Sea, chanting "GO KARL" and allowed Opie his moment of glory.

See you soon, my friend.
PS: Mr. Hawk was really grateful that he didn't have to carry THAT SWEATER back to the hotel with him.

Okay, now I gotta see that sweater!

Gee, it wasn't that long ago that you were looking after a strain; then the confidence starts to come around in a big way, and, voila ... PR City! Great work. It's wonderful to see you running so well. Hopefully the rowing played a small part, hmm?

Karl, ya did it! Nice job, you. Eugene would be a perfect follow-up, don't you think? Glad to hear that the entire trip was fun!

For a Maniac, it's always "what's next?" Although I listed the Austin half in the calendar here, there's a good chance I'll run the Lost Dutchman Marathon, along with my good luck charm Dove. Check this out:
http://www.lostdutchmanmarathon.org/.../elevation.gif
I ran the half two years ago. She's run this one the last two years and is an expert on how to run downhill properly. I'm just waiting for Southwest to send me a cheap air fare notice to Phoenix.

Erika and Peter, thanks for the photo. Peter was out on the course, encouraging me, and shouting "Opie!" at the finish. Jim, don't worry. I have more lucky sweaters and such. DW wasn't sure which one I was talking about!

Congratulations on a wonderful PR, Karl. Sounds like you've got a good friend in Dove and I hope you can team up again soon. You are really running well. Great photos!

P.S. Any plans to check MT off your to-do list?
