Where? Ontario is a big place.

I've canoed alone in Algonquin Park, it is safe if you are aware of hazards and have had experience.

I've heard scary stories aboot check shirts and excessive politeness.

Seriously I'll be spending 2 nights at Niagara on the Lake. Apparently there's a big waterfall in the area.

After that I have 2 nights to tour around. I'll really be looking for nice trails to get some long runs in.

Stay away from Niagara Falls, the town. Niagara on the lake is gentrified, pretty, refined, boring.

Lots of trails in and around the Niagara peninsula to hold your attention.

That Snidely Whiplash guy I hear is real nasty fellow...

Seriously, just say away from the U.S. side of Niagara Falls, and you'll be a lot better off

When I was up there, I thought Niagara On the Lake was one of the most beautiful towns I had ever seen. I could live there if there was a place to work.

The only thing bad was, it was expensive.

When our family vacationed up there, had I known, I would have stayed up there.

Niagara Falls (which is where we stayed), on the other hand, was a hole. Tattoo parlors, bars, all within a few blocks of the falls. And I'm talkin' the ON side.

I'm sure the NY side is just as bad.

Was that a typo? Because if it was, it's a pretty funny one.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed driving up to the falls from the US side - looked pretty much how you describe the ON side. Better view of the falls from the Canadian side anyway. Granted, this was 15 years ago, but I can't imagine things have changed too much.

Oh yeah, don't drive from Niagara Falls to Windsor on the Canadian side unless you want to possibly die of boredom heh (at least, until you get to the Toronto area)

And yeah, I noticed the typo (if it was one too)...got a out of that too

Tip for Canoeing on the Niagara River:

Stay well away from the big hill. Water goes over it quickly.

BTW Anyone who hasn't been to Niagara Falls in the past 15 years should note that the Canadian side is sadly losing most of the lovely shops that sell the black satin pillows with the falls on them. They have been replaced mega-hotels....with new ones being built all the time. There are about 20 of them now. In fact they have changed the spray and mist patterns coming off the falls.

To stay safe in Ontario on a holiday weekend I suggest a helmet eh.

Yah- I just was in Niagra Falls last weekend, and I have to say this- except for JC's chirp in is out dated information. It's all American Chain restaurants and mega hotels- and of course- the central point- the Mall and Casino.

Seriously- Last weekend we were there, it was a hot summer night, and I was thinking to myself it was a Canadian Las Vegas.

Of course- until you go down the hill from the Casino and get to the Falls where I smooched my girlfriend and made her laugh by yelling "Hey America! You such at Hockey and making beer! ... but thanks for Football!"

Oh and Satfix- in answer to your original question- it's probably pretty safe, although there seems to be a pattern of every single year as the Midway is closing for another year- a group of young men riot and someone gets shot and killed.

So- stay away from the Midway as it closes and groups of young men.

I've always imagined Niagara Falls s a Canadian Las Vegas. Except Las Vegas would have demolished the Falls to build a dancing replica. That's why I'm not staying there.

In amidst all of the sparklies there is still the tawdry. Unfortunately it sits on top of one of the most historic of sites, places like the Battle of Lundy's Lane are given scant mention (apart from a museum), and the site is now an outlet mall.

Ah...so it's *OUR* fault that you Canucks ruined your side.... <I'd insert a smiley here, if we had them>

And, by the way, America has awesome beers...just not the mass produced ones. Don't get me started. Friggin' prohibition...messed it up for everyone...

Oh, and with regard to football...you guys have more guts than we do...3 downs...no free catch...I love it...
