Hi everyone,
I'm hoping that some of you may have suggestions or advice. Last Christmas I had ripped my calf muscle and underwent 4 months of physical therapy. Afterwards I went through the C25K program and I'm now in the 4th week of the 60 minute running program (by Switzer). On Sunday I went out for my normal 30 minute run. I stretched and then warmed up by walking for 5 mins, then started running. Within minutes, my calf was aching horribly and I could feel a knot and it was painful to the touch.

I didn't run or anything yesterday, and then today I just did elliptical and rowing. Where the knot is underneath the skin is now very red, as if it's going to turn into a big black and blue. It's about the diameter of a drinking cup. I don't think it's a blood clot because it's not hot at all, just painful.

Any ideas or suggestions? I'm so disappointed in this recent development. It's so incredibly frustrating.

Thanks in advance,
Susan

Wow, that doesn't sound good. I think you should get it checked. It's the same place where the tear was?

when you were released from PT, did they discuss scar tissue with you? have you kept up with strength training? It sounds like a possible grade 2 tear. When I tore my hamstring, it hurt one day and then the next day it was bruised with a bulge in the middle of the bruise. Alot of the reason for strength training is to build up the muscle tissue surrounding the tear. I was told I needed to do this or I'd tear the muscle surrounding the previous tear.

eventhough, my PT said that all the work that I did was to prevent scar tissue, I've had massage therapists pnpoint exactly where it happened and confirm that there is indeed scar tissue and it would have to be worked on or it will tear again.

I think you really need to see a doctor, unfornuately. Calf tears are the suck. I couldn't even do elliptical. If the pain is in the same place, I'd be freaking p.o'd after that amount of PT.

It's a tear. I'm frustrated beyond belief and was even in tears at the dr's office. I'm in a leg brace for the next 3 weeks with no running, walking (except a few feet at a time at work), rowing, elliptical, stairmaster, cycling, etc. After 3 weeks, I'm supposed to start PT again. Almost my entire calf is red now but starting to turn to black & blue, and the shin is black & blue too. My ankle is obscenely swollen from fluid running down inside the leg.

My husband has so kindly suggested that since I can't do cardio but still need some aerobic activity, that we should start a marathon sex session to last the next 3 weeks. It's a good thing he has such a wonderful sense of humor. <not funny!>

So now I'm grouchy and frustrated. And I can't eat much b/c now that I can't move around, I'd get fat if I eat my normal amount. Separating a grown woman from her food is a dangerous thing.

Thank you all for your sympathy and kind thoughts.
oh susan! {{{susan}}}

Hang in there! And follow the doctor's instructions, no matter how frustrating... you want to get better for good.

Susan, that majorly sucks... Hang in there and as tough as it may be, do what the doc said. I can relate about the food (I am getting to where I want but am still overweight). I jumped from one injury to another and it's been tough to control, but I was actually able to lose some weight without sacrifice. Just paying attention. The days I could do NOTHING by doc's orders, I felt like I was going to explode, but I did it by the book and things are progressing.
