Today I went out on what was supposed to be a 100miler. At about mile 4 my left pedal broke at the cleat, it basically disassembled itself while I was riding .

I have broken three pedal sets this year, the first two, crank Bro's, and then this set, which are speedplays.

I'm really baffled as to why I keep breaking pedals but this is getting super expensive and with Iron Man coming up in 3 weeks, I cannot afford anymore broken pedals. Before I go out and try yet another pedal I would really like to hear what you guys think is the best pedal. I would love to hear from those of you that put out crazy high wattage, and lots of torque, as that's how I bike too. Thanks!

Crank brothers eggbeaters are a poor quality pedal, I have broken many using them off road. I have owned about 10 pair of speedplays and never had one break, sometimes the cleats get clogged up. The look pedals are well built, as are time and shimano.

With the look and speedplay, you have to be careful not to overtighten the cleats when you install.

Yeah, I agree with you JR, Crank bro's are not worth it. It's kind of suspect that they anodize them, usually that means they're trying to get away with cheaper metal at least that's the case with drill bits and other tools. I'm really bummed about the speed plays as I really like them, but I can't have them keep breaking either so I might have to go the SPD route and go with shimano or something that I know has a track record of rarely failing. Ron, I may just be heading out to buy some shimano pedals this week if I can't figure out why the speedplays broke. I will definitely check out Look, and Time too. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a pair of Shimano Ultegra that I have riden for about a year and a half and haven't had any problems with them. I like them, they do what they need to do. I am not one to do everything possible to lighten my ride, so the Ultegra were the right choice for me over the Dura Ace.

Good luck!
