I am a bread junkie. I usually eat sandwiches for lunch. They are fast easy and travel well. (I am on the road a lot)

But........even though I eat whole wheat bread, I think it is stalling my weight loss efforts. I am looking for options to replace it if possible.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Low carb wraps/tortillas or low carb pitas. Wal-Mart here carries the Joseph's brand of low-carb pitas -- only 60 calories per pita. They're a bit more flimsy than a regular pita but they do hold your sandwich fixin's.

Or maybe use rice cakes to make open-face sandwiches?

like off of a big head of lettuce!

also, asian food stores carry rice wraps, they usually come in a round plastic container, about 1/2 inch high. You soak them in water for a few seconds and make wraps out of them.

this is what they look like:

Mmm, rice wraps.

I think the lettuce wraps usually use iceberg lettuce because it's stiffer. You might need toothpicks or something to secure your wraps with on the road, though. Or pack the leaves and fillings separately and make before eating.

There are also low-calorie/low-carb torillas out there. And what about flatbread crackers?

Tortillas are definitely an option...I'm going to have to go have one now that you mention it.

It won't work so well with bagged lettuce.. Buy a head of Romaine and you get a nice long wide leaf to roll.

WHat about putting andwich fixings in a salad? Or in a sealed container and eating with veggies as finger food ( tuna, chicken salads, hummus) ?
I do this for lunch a lot as it is easier and at school sometimes we have a too-early lunchtime so a big sandwich is too much!

My mom has celiac disease, so she can't have bread anymore. She like using the romaine lettuce leaf as a wrap, and she also uses a corn tortilla at other times.

My favorite non-wheat-based lunch is a salad, with lots of veggies and some beans (chickpeas, white beans, or black beans are tasty). If you have to prepare it beforehand, it works to mix the dressing, chopped onion and beans in a separate container, and then mix it with the greens when you're ready to eat.

Veggies dipped in hummus is also very good, but I also like to have a pita to dip in it as well!

Well, today I bought some tortillas, a head of lettuce and some pita bread. So far I have tried a tortilla and it was great!

I am anxious to try the pitas. Its still bread, but not as much and the calories are lower, so its all good!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
