Morning!

Fun - GORGEOUS sunrise here this morning. I don't know how long this weather is going to last, but right now it's so beautiful and the birds are all chirpy and stuff.

Not fun - Dh has to work this weekend. His employer hosts a Mother's Day brunch that is a HUGE deal in town, and even though he isn't managing banquets any more, he is the only one left on the compound who isn't fazed by feeding a couple/few thousand people (not kidding) in a 4 hour period. He pretty much always gets sucked back into this one. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it gives him something else to think about. It's been 8 years but he misses his mom terribly, and this weekend is always difficult for him. Anyway, he had to go in today to organize reservations and lay out a plan for the current banquet manager, and tomorrow he has to go in and run it.

FUN: I got a 2nd coat on the 1st side of the rest of my shelf boards, and I checked the bowl I threw with the new rib last night, and it really is going to work! Now I just need to throw 49 more before the end of the weekend. heh.

Good Morning!

Love the weekend!! Too bad I've been doing work since 6 am, but hopefully, I'll finish up soon.

Fun: Going to a Kentucky Derby Party later today. Should be a good time.

Not fun: 4 page paper that has not written itself. No paper, no party.

Really not fun: Totalling the school supply box orders for the PTO. Ugh. That was painful.

Hope everyone has a fab weekend!

Fun today is going to my sister's house in a little bit for her DD's 1st Communion party. I didn't go to the mass, but I went to a shrine 2 towns over so I could get her a rosary. I think she'll like the one I found. Her fave color is pink and I found one that was clear beads with a fuschia stripe up the middle.

In general, my weekend fun is family oriented. Hanging out at mom's tomorrow, I got her a wine bottle stopper with hand blown glass top. It is clear with a blue swirl inside. Two of the art clubs (glass club and ceramic club) have a sale right before Christmas and Mother's Day and I like to buy stuff from them, either as gifts or for myself. Gotta support the young artists. :)

Winter - Yes, it makes me very happy.

This is what traditional ribs look like

They're usually made of rubber, wood or metal. They can be flexible or not. They're used to smooth or shape clay.

This is the one I made (from hard plastic)

See that notch in the lower left? That's the important part.

This is a yarn bowl I just trimmed. (It took me 2.5 hours to trim 17 yarn bowls. Which is pretty speedy, but when you get involved with big production, it's still way too much time.) See how the foot of the bowl flares out and then cuts back in? The notch in the rib I made will do that. So the bowl will still look like it's been trimmed, but it won't take the time to actually do it.

The only way to tell the bowls I'll throw with the yellow rib haven't really been trimmed is if you look at the bottom, because the bottom will just be flat, it won't have that indentation carved into it. And hey, it's the bottom. Do we really care, as long as it's finished nicely?

Ok. So 17 bowls trimmed so far. I'm having a short break and then heading back down to throw probably 25 bowls.

Unexpected fun: I headed over this afternoon to help my step-mom with their yard sale. Turns out that someone in the family bought 3 little ducklings for my step-niece. They're just at 2 weeks old, but quite comical. Of course, they're not particularly pleased about being held, but I did so anyway. Cute little buggers. Especially whey they were placed in a kiddie pool and could swim a little and clean their feathers! I forget what their names were, but I gave them second names as Larry, Moe and Curly! Nyuk Nyuk!

happy mother's day!

with the help of DH, allie managed to imprint her little hands and feet in plaster which was framed along with this poem:

"Two little feet, ten little toes,

leave their impressions today.

soon they will wear two little shoes,

and be running and jumping at play.

two little feet, too little time,

before they are walking to school,

kicking a rock, or skipping a rope,

wading a puddle or jumping a pool.

Two little feet, One little child,

Will soon go their own way,

but footprints in your mind recall,

they stood here yesterday.

My little handprints on the walls

On the mirrors and in the halls

I'll be grown one day

And all those tiny handprints

will surely fade away

So here's a special gift

Just so you can recall

Exactly how my hands looked

when i was very small"

*sniff* we're going out to brunch after AK wakes up from nap.

i have to say i'm very touched by DH's efforts to make my first mother's day truly special.

Fun: Happy Mother's Day to all teh great running moms here!

People continue to live in the aftermath of the storms. The volunteer efforts continue on, even as other parts of our country are in the process if being impacted by flooding. ESPN host Rece Davis is an Alabama graduate. [he was a couple of years ahead of me in the School of Communication]. In this video, Rece returns to Tuscaloosa and profile the facebook group known as Toomers for Tuscaloosa. Alabama and Auburn will meet on the field Nov 26th of the upcomming football season. But between the fans, this rivalry has been changed. Many have said that they will never view each other the same. A new bond of friendship has been formed.

Hi all - happy mother's day to all you moms out there!

Cooked up some french toast (first time for me - not a huge french toast dude, but every now and then crave it) for mom's day brunch - not bad, but I'm going to tweak the recipe and/or use another the last time. Oh, yeah, slice up the bread maybe a touch thinner too the next time around. Homemade strawberry syrup turned out a lot tastier - could use that on some other stuff down the road.

I am sleeping off a hangover from too much fun last night! First we were at a grad party for some of K's students, and then we had drinks with a couple of my colleagues. OY!

Happy Mother's day everyone - whether you're a mom to the two footed or four footed critters!

French toast sounds mighty good, Moonie. Where do I sign up?

PhDatc - Meh. My fun got pushed back until next Saturday. Hmph! Thanks for asking though!

Tim- Thanks for posting that link. The Auburn kids and crew have shown amazing class and honor. What a wonderful thing to see.
