A Winnipeg human rights lawyer is trying to use an obscure law to get the province to seize the cadavers used in a controversial touring attraction.

David Matas said the cadavers could be those of political prisoners from China, and there is no evidence the bodies were obtained by consent.

Matas has written a letter to Health Minister Theresa Oswald asking her to not give permission for the exhibit to leave Manitoba because the company can't show the exact circumstances by which the bodies were obtained.

"We don't know the providence of these bodies. We don't know that the donors are the source consented or their families in those circumstances. The bodies should just be buried in Manitoba," he said.

However, he would also be happy if the bodies were taken back to China to be buried.

The Manitoba government is reviewing Matas's request, according to a spokesperson, and Oswald is expected to comment on the matter Friday afternoon.

The bodies are from China but there is no evidence they were obtained with proper consent, critics allege.

Bodies …The Exhibition features real bodies, literally stripped down, enabling people to see everything that makes up the human form.

More than 200 actual specimens are on display in nine galleries spread throughout the downtown MTS Centre Exhibition Hall.

The travelling exhibit, assembled by Atlanta-based Premier Exhibitions Inc., is billed as educating people about the body and the effects of health and lifestyle choices — both good and bad — and increasing interest in the science of anatomy.

The exhibit opened Sept. 17 and ends Jan. 16. The original closing date of Jan. 9 has been extended.

To date, more than 15 million people around the world have seen the show.

Matas said the province's Anatomy Act requires the minister of health to give permission for bodies to be removed from the province.

The exhibit was banned in Seattle earlier this year because of allegations that the bodies were executed political prisoners.
