Last week I bent a skewer. No idea why just noticed the smell of burning rubber off the sidewall, stopped and looked and viola the skewer was bent and the wheel rubbing!

Replaced skewer and all seemed well

Setup the trainer yesterday and noticed the back wheel wasn't rotating freely from the get go. I checked brakes, nope. I checked for obstructions, nope. But the wheel was rubbing the side of the frame. I also noticed there is a washer thing (maybe 1cm) on the left side in the skewer. Never had one of those on my old bike.

It seems I can push the wheel, perpendicular to normal forward motion, and get it to not rub... For a bit. During my 1hr on the trainer I had adjust it again 2x

WTF?!?!?!? Can I fix this? Is my wheel fooked? this happened to both my prior wheels - over time - and I'm afraid >I< am the problem here. With my new bike, all the clearances are smaller.

EDITED: To fix all the wrong words my stupid iPad used. I swear it's not worth typing anything on that thing

Does it only happen on the trainer? Like, perhaps your bike is not set up exactly perpendicular to the roller drum and over time it slowly bends your wheel? Is the wheel true anymore??

Wheel is true, it happened even when walking the bike TO the living room. Like the brakes were dragging. It's how I noticed it (this time). Interesting though, I'd have to look - I wonder if the frayed tire is not helping things too. the one side is pretty well messed up.

I think I "may" have a lead here on this issue... that extra washer (the 1cm one) I moved to the INSIDE of the frame. So it's skewer head, spring, frame, washer, powertap, frame, spring, skewer end (tail?)

It was... skewer head, spring, washer, frame, powertap, frame, spring, skewer end (tail?)

Now, the tire doesn't have a ton of clearence on the left side of the frame (up top) but it does indeed clear it. I suspect I need to tweak the washer situation. It screwed in, so it clearly belonged there... I'm wondering if the LBS accidentaly put it on the outside? I suspect if they did they had a reason. Or maybe I screwed up after the bent skewer and put it in the wrong position - that's ENTIRELY possible.

But I think I need a bit more on that side to make it "even" up at the top part of the frame. it's like 70/30 right now.

I am at the inlaws so I have zero tools really, so I'm not going to mess with it until later this week when I get home. I was able to get a solid 1:30 trainer ride in with no rubbing. Still spewing rubber, but I think it's either leftover or just this cheap tire. I'm going to toss it when I get home and put on an old race tire.

I have never heard of having a washer on the skewer. Get rid of it, I have nearly the same frame as you and the the trainer skewer should just consist of the two springs. It could be that this extra thing you have in there causes some issues with setting the tire. The symptons may not appear at first but as you go, something may shift as the frame settles into the skewer as it wasn't truly set in the first place with the extra junk you have in there.

Now that I have high speed access, i did some searches on the powertap - and it looks like it is indeed part of that unit! HTF did it get OFF is a huge mystery though...

Look on far left. If take it off, there is a big gap between the frame and the PT housing.

First, a big guy like you should have a steel rear skewer with an internal locking mechanism, not a cam type. I suggest either an older campy or shimano dura ace. Ask your shop for an old used one, the campy is especially pretty. I use these on all my bikes, I throw the new skewers away.

Second, you may have a broken axle. The alloy axles on the cheaper wireless PT's are pretty flimsy, check that. Make sure the frame is not broken at a weld.

In terms of the washers, there should be a locknut with a flat or knurled face on each side facing out, no washers on either side, that makes no sense as the skewer needs to squeeze against metal.

Your skewer needs to have a nice knurled steel surface to bite into the frame. If you are on the road and your rear skewer isn't holding, you can stop and switch it so the lever is on the right side, dorky but effective.

i turned off the autocorrect on the ipad, it's brutal
