The running joke at the house is this, after someone comes home from a run..."so did you get hit by a car today?" Well as I arrived home later from my run than normal of course I got to tell the Canadian, "Why yes I did get hit today." I got smacked as a car was pulling out of a church driveway, whacked my left leg and then running over my feet with both the front and rear tires. fortunatley the driver wasn't moving very fast, so the impact wasn't that hard, but enough for the neighbors who saw it happen call 911. Three police cars, one ambulance and one fire truck, all for the fallen runner. All I really wanted to do was finish my run....I was cookin for a change, I was at 6.75 and hitting a 7:15 pace, fastest run since last april, I didn't want it spoiled. Like the car, I didn't win that battle either. So my Dr. says no runnning for two weeks. Injury report: major deep contusions on my leg above my knee, asphalt burns to both knees, left palm, left shoulder, and oif course both elbows. I will run Eugene....maybe not as fast as I'd like.

I am glad that nothing more serious happened. Talk about adrenaline rush, you just wanted to finish the run, eh?
Be a good patient now and you will be back on the road in no time. Good luck in Eugene!
Every time a car cuts me off or fails to yield when I'm in a crosswalk I yell at them or even hit them if they get close enough. My hope is that the next time they'll pay attention to potential runners. Of course I hope not of them stop and chase me with a gun. I've had cars beep at me when I cross with the walk sign on because I caused them a 2 second delay. Naturally I assume every car I see is going to ignore me and run me over but I still let them know when they cut it too close. I just hope by making a big deal then people will start paying more attention and avoiding these kinds of things.

Glad you're ok. I bet the driver was taking a right turn and only looking left!! This happens soooo often and then when they finally see someone to the right, they get all huffy like we shouldn't be there! Very frustrating! Thank God you'll be alright.

*pfhew*!

Like Gin, I assume this was a right-turner who didn't look for you.

I've never thumped a car, but have delivered my fair share of dirty looks. On the whole, this is a pedestrian-friendly city, to the extent that it bewilders my Michigan and Florida relatives. "What's with all the idiots riding their bikes in the road, already?"

Take care of yourself and maybe keep an eye out for surprise aftershocks. Getting bruised that deeply can touch more than just the very core of your body.

Also: I swear by homeopathic arnica for bruising. Take it in, put it on. The stuff works. It shouldn't, by any rational measure - and I've had a rational education, I promise - but it works.

Reminds me....I called the DMV about the driver who cut me off (when I had the walk signal and she was... turning right), and they said call the non-emergency police line. (I had memorized her license number.)

So I called the non-emergency police line and they said they'll take down the information only if it has been within the last 15 minutes. Hmmm
So, should I go through the effort next time?

At the very minimum, we must wave angrily at the driver. I raise my hand up in a motion that says "stop", and some actually do...others give me a confused look and keep driving through as they cut me off.

I wouldn't thump anyone's precious car (WJ did this unintentionally, heehee). I tapped (lightly) a woman's car in SEattle once and she stopped her car in the middle of a busy 4-lane street, got out of it and proceeded to go ballistic, yelling her head off.

I always worry about this... and yes the right-turners-looking-left-while-rolling are the real scary ones. Glad to hear nothing was broken, except your awesome run (great run, by the way!). Take it easy and come back for Eugene!

Good grief, WJ! Thank heavens it wasn't any worse but still plenty bad enough. Take care.

Geez, wj, I'm glad you're okay. Heal quickly.

Fortunately (I guess...), I've been terrorized by more bicyclists than cars. I do make it a point to give a little wave and mouth a 'thank you' to drivers that wait for me when I'm crossing in an unmarked intersection, even though that's what the law requires them to do.

You're getting so speedy, wj, now the cars are trying to take you down.

Glad I can joke about it, but it's serious business. Do what the doctor says and take care of the contusions and abrasions. Hope s/he prescribed some fine wine to ease the pain (self-medication and all; you know best).

See you in Eugene.

Hey Kelly, glad you weren't hurt too bad, considering the usual consequences of man vs. car. I was wondering where you've been the past couple of days. I yell at cars and give the one finger salute all the time. Makes me glad most of my running is out in the woods. But the key here is "pulling out of the church driveway". Watch out for those overly religious types , they'll get ya every time. (Just a joke, don't call down fire & brimstone on my skinny a$$)

Cars...scary...cars....got hit by one myself once. The car won the round. Not too bad, though, I got a broken arm and an ambulance ride.

Be sure to take photos for Robin's lecture! And get better fast!
