There's a tiny little ice cream producer down south in Homestead named Gaby's Farm that I've been hearing raves about. They produce a few different tropical fruit flavors of ice cream and sorbet that are carried in specialty shops locally, as well as Whole Foods Market. I had never seen it in any local stores.

At WF tonight, I came across their stuff in the freezer section. I bought a pint of the Mango Passion sorbet and figured we'd give it a taste.

This stuff is SO FREAKING AMAZING. Seriously, it's one of the most delicious desserts I've ever put in my mouth. Seriously. I only let myself eat a little, and I think I'm making this post so long b/c if I'm typing I can't go back to the freezer. So thanks for the help.

If you find this in your freezer section, you must try it!

Oh, that' sounds really delicious!

I had Passionfruit Ice Cream in New Zealand. Most delicious ice cream I've had, too. This sounds like it's worth visiting FL for

I'll look for Gaby's.

In the meantime, this is my current ice cream fixation:

They make a rum raisin ice cream bar that tastes like frozen egg nog. Their sweet corn ice cream is also very good.

Super Target and Whole Foods usually carries Palapa Azul.

Did she make it for you herself in a big old ice cream maker, or did she buy it?

My grammie made strawberry ice cream in an old cranky contraption. It was her workout for the season. I wish she made mango too!

little white girl whose grammie made her go to the scary shed and find the ice cream maker and then haul the big sacks of rock salt around.

No. We had a local ice cream shop that carried Mango (if you're familiar with the Bay Area - Loard's Ice Cream)

I do, however, have an ice cream maker at home. Not a hand turn, rather a mechanical one with a motor. I have been very impresssed with the results. The last two batches were Peach and Chocolate.

No workout involved in the making of ice cream. All pleasure...

I grew up in the Bay Area, San Jose to be exact, but haven't heard of Loard's. Your mother was a smart woman to buy it instead of making it.

Oh yeah? I grew up in Hayward. Loard's was in San Leandro. I can't remember that it was a franchise. Don't know if its still there since I left in 1989.

Probably a small shop that had a niche market with the SE Asians!

I'll bet it's still there! Next time I go home for a visit, I'll commandeer my mom's car and drive out in that general direction.

There is some amazing food in the Bay Area.

I stayed in Hayward for a couple of months for work years ago. Fun area! Very multi-ethnic, and safe as long as you knew what you were doing.

Last night we tried the passion fruit ice cream and sapote (nispero in some SA countries) ice cream. They were delicious, but not as good as the sorbet. The sorbet really lets the flavors of the fruit shine through. I will say that sapote is a really interesting fruit flavor, w/ hints of cherry, chocolate and persimmon.

Cool ice cream memorie, you guys!
