I just completed the AT100 last weekend and am planning on another 100 in 2 months. This is the first time I have attempted to do 100's this close together. My question is, should I do long runs between races or just maintain what I have? If I should be doing long runs, how long and how many should I do between races? I know we are all different and such, just would like to know your personal experiences with your training on close together 100's, and what has worked for you and not worked for you.

Generally what I have done, and am doing, is take it easy the 2-3 weeks following the 100 miler (like a reverse taper) then do some nice quality runs during the week and some long runs, then a 3 week taper for the next race. My long runs, because of time constraints and a baby, are closer to 18-24 miles, where in the past, in a situation like this, i may have tried to get one longer long run in there, like 28-32 miles, but I do not think it is necessary.

Are you doing Ancient Oaks in December? If you are then your long runs should be 100-200 laps around your living room to train for the monotony (I'll probably be there to crew/pace)

LOL.....yes Professor. AO 100. Hope to see you out there. Looked for you at Croom last April, but couldnt find you. Thanks for the input merigayle. That is pretty close to what I was going to follow, so now I have confidence now that is the right plan I am going to run every other day this week, start to train harder next week and probably do 2 long runs up to 3 weeks before the race, and then a normal taper.

That two months you speak of is more like eleven weeks (10-2/3 for Arkansas, 12-18/19 for Ancient Oaks). That could change the routine from just maintenance running to putting a long-run or two back into the mix. I suppose the intent of the run could change how you view it, but with the typical three-week recovery and three-week taper you are left with a six-week training window in the middle--plenty of time for one good cycle of training instead of maintaining.

On a side-note -- how far apart can these things be and still be thought of as back-to-back? Before I read the original post I was thinking of consecutive weekends.
