This was my 4th trip to Humboldt County to run either the Avenue of the Giants (in May) or the Humboldt Redwoods (in Oct). This time, I opted for the half. This proved to be wise on my part since my running since the debacle in Sacramento in December has been fair to poor. I took a month off completely to try to heal up my chronic PF, then started back using low HR training to try to build/rebuild base. I kept this slow running up until the second week of April. I averaged about 35 mile/week at about 10 minute pace. During this time, I developed an issue with my back/hip. It was still bothering me even as I increased my mileage and my average pace. I also started to run some tempo work and strides.
All that to say that I didn't really expect much from this race. I decided that 1:45 (8 minute pace) would be a reasonable goal, so I planned on going for even splits on the out and back course. Long story less long, I was actually able to run a -2 minute negative split and finish in 1:41:12. I'm satisfied, even though that's about 12 minutes off my PR. I was happy that I felt good and very strong throughout the entire race. I was also pleased that when I "put the hammer down" at mile 9 my legs responded with my 4 fastest miles of the race, mile 13 being the fastest of the day at 7:12.
Maybe I can use this to jump start my training for the summer?

Ya know, since visiting those redwoods in 2001 I have always hankered to return. Gotta do that some day.

1:41... after only running 10 minute miles in training? Hup, you haven't lost much in the way of pep in your step. It bodes well for the summer and for revenge this December.

And to be able to end with your fastest miles, that's just icing on the cake.

What's with the back? Did it react well to the race?

Very scenic country Hup!

I think all those miles from years gone by are still helping out when you need them to help out. I experienced something similar over the final 4 miles of my HM, where I ran about 30 seconds per mile faster than the first 9. I am convinced it was not my most recent training that enabled me, but rather my training from last year and the year before.
