The U.S. 10k road race classic that has been held for 17 consecutive years on Cobb Parkway has been cancelled for 2011 due to a decline in race sponsorships.

This race normally has 8 to 10,000 runners as well as a cycling contingent each year. I'm amost as shocked at this announcement as I would be if the Peachtree Road Race announced a one year suspension.

I have already registered for the 2011 U.S 10k and supposedly I will get a full refund. To be honest I registered at a really reduced rate because I registered within 5 days of the ending of last years race and they had a special rate. I really don't care if they keep the money as it was probably only $15.00 or so. I'm just stunned at this turn of events.

This will be the talk in every running group this weekend in the Atlanta metro area. Hopefully not many other races will fall to the wayside due to sponsorship declines.
