The one I interviewed for in June 2006.

Good News:

It's the ATF, seems like a cool gig, who doesn't want to play with alcohol, tobacco and firearms.

Bad News:

I'd lose another year of promotion because the job was announced at my pay grade from two years ago and I would have to return to that level for a year, SO I would stay at my current salary instead of receiving this year's raise.

It's a two year training commitment, if I suck, then they have the option to not convert me to a 'real' Fed. I'm currently a 'real' Fed.

No outside the U.S. travel, at least not for a long, long time.

No SoCal gigs available, here are my options:

Yuma, Arizona
McAllen, Texas
Los Cruces, New Mexico
Tuscon, Arizona
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
St. Paul, Minnesota

I have to let them know my decision by Wed.

Congrats on the offer. Collecting offers is good.

The real question is: Will we see you on TV??

That's great to hear!

None of those places sound particularly inviting although if heat is what you like Tuscon would be a good place to go. Bites about the downgrade and the probationary period.

My sense is that you're pretty happy where you are and you get the cool travelling opportunity. I'd stay put.

If this is the job you truly want, then the pay does not matter.

I say take a pass until/unless they have a position somewhere you want to live.

Maybe they need help in their Seattle office...

For some reason the following quote from Blazing Saddles comes immediately to mind:

What's a dazzling urbanite like you doing in a rustic setting like this?

Dude!

You hated Seattle, so why would you like any of those other (smaller) cities. You seem -- at least around here -- to be happiest in LA.

Other than having an ATF jacket I don't see anything in your post that makes it sound like an upward move.

You would be the FNG. FNG's get sent to cities like the ones you listed.

If you see yourself at the ATF in 30 years or you can use this as a lateral move into something you really want to do down the road, go for it.

If not, stick with what you have for the time being.

I guess the other question is whether or not the ATF position would give you some new skill sets that would make you more marketable in the future (be it fed or the real world).
