"Atheist's complain that they don't have a holiday...but they do! They have April fools day!!!"

Some gal, three times removed from me, posted this on her facebook page. It showed up on my page, for some gosh-darned reason. I guess she's some friend of the wife of my cousin. This wife "liked" the post. My cousin's wife. My cousin.

Now, I've recently re-connected with my cousins. One is married to the ultra-evangelical wife, mentioned above. She doesn't work or have any job skills because her faith discourages it. I've enjoyed her, as a person, and find her delightful and poo-pooed my family's warnings about her. I even went to one of her church's twelve-steps support group events, just to explore what my cousin and his fundamentalist wife were doing with their lives. They were helping recovering addicts. Great! That's doing good! But then, many of the recover-ees recited homosexuality as an addiction they were recovering from, along with alcoholism and oh...crack cocaine. Etc. Uh. Ok.

Anyway, I flew off the handle today and replied to her random friend's post (which I didn't think I could do. It appeared to post, but I'm not certain. She's not on my friend list)

"Why do I have to read this typo-ridden and arrogant nonsense, from a Christian, no less? Blocked."

And then I blocked my cousin's wife. Shit. I really like my cousin! He's so lovely. I want to know him, his wife and his children. But I guess that's not going to work to well. She thinks I'm a fool. I'm pretty sure she'd consider a speedily fallen-away Catholic like me an atheist. It's a weird feeling when you realize a family member or friend sees you as a fool. Or lost to hellfire. Even during my most vehemently Catholic moments, I've never thought "Oh, you fools! I know better!" But when people asked me about faith stuff, I said I believed in God and described why.

Arrogance.

Which leads me to question my own arrogance.

Hi!

I was staying with a relative and she had a member of her church come and talk to me, the person got all religiously on me, and before I knew it, he shouting " today is your birthday"
"today you've accepted Jesus Christ as your savior". I looked and said, I'm a confirmed Catholic. He told me that's all right Catholics aren't true Christians. I said, " I'm going to ask you to leave now".

i don't like people that put down other people to raise their self-esteem. I don't have time for an entire religion that would do this

That's beyond awkward.

Your comment, "I don't have time for an entire religion that would do this," reminds me of a moment, not long ago, when the thought popped into my head, "wouldn't it be a relief to not have to defend my faith anymore? I would not have to explain why I was Catholic, despite my disagreement with its teachings on contraception and homosexuality. I would not have to live with this internal divide." To borrow from you, "I don't have the time" to live this conflict.

And with that, I felt such relief.

I'm not sure where I am with the whole faith thing. It may come back. I'm just enjoying this unexpected relief.

Weird!
Bux-

I had the same problems, especially as I was a product of the "catholic way" and hearing my mother say "do you think I wanted this many kids". However, I don't condemn most of my Catholic teachings and I think it helped form the person that I've become, but I've enjoyed my long break. However, during my break I've managed to raise one child that is atheist and one agnostic, I like to think they are free thinkers, but then there is my secret desire to want them to believe in something...and maybe they actually do...

Yes, I identify.

There are sides to arguments where I just want to yell at both parties that they are raving loonies and are both wrong.

In the atheism vs. belief debates it seems as if either side sets up straw man arguments and debate them rather than listen to what is being presented. I have become apatheistic. I don't know and I don't care. That's not entirely true, but I think that anyone who claims to have the truth is a liar.

What nice responses everyone posted.

I wish I hadn't snapped back at that random person. What good does it do? It feels good for a few hours, to be puffed up with fury. But that passes.

I really hope that I mellow with age. This self-righteous indignation that I show does more harm than good, I think.
