My 70.3 is this weekend. Although the bike course isn't "real" hills, I've never done well on the "rollers". This year, son1 and I went down several times so I would get to know every inch of the course. I mastered each and every one of those stupid "hills". I just got an email from the RD. THEY CHANGED THE BIKE COURSE! Yah, we will drive the course on Saturday, but I won't have time to actually ride the course, to get a feel of the hills. I am bumming! Someone talk me down!!!!!!!!

I've never pre-ridden a 70.3 course. In fact, I've only ever driven small portions. You'll be fine. Just keep it at "60-mile effort" the entire time whether you're pointed uphill, downhill, or dealing with a headwind or whatever. Same effort all the time.

Nice Version: You've done the work, you'll be fine. The course is irrelevant.

Matt Version: Suck it up, Buttercup. Courses get changed. Weather changes. Shit happens. It's Thursday. Nothing you can do now but roll with it and show 'em what you're made of. So go show 'em.

Bannon--love it! Thanks for that smack upside the head. I needed it.

jr--yah, everyone has to ride the same course. BUT I DON"T KNOW WHAT THAT COURSE IS!!! I trained on the old course. I know that damned hill into Catawba. I don't know the new course.

ronbo--did you ride the new course? Is it really easier?

I guess it is partly my fault. After son1 and I rode the course the first time this season, I talked with the RD and told him the road was getting in really bad shape. ie--don't bring a broom to clear the gravel, bring a coal shovel and bring a couple extra cans of paint to mark the holes. That was back in July. Why did the RD wait until days before the race to change the course?! 'Spose maybe it had to do with USAT certifying the course???

I can imagine the disappointmnet, but take it as fuel and motivation to get out there and show them that even a course change won't hold you down. You're trained, you're ready, now go have a great race!!

I've driven the course of a marathon once, only because my relay partner wanted to....I really dislike knowing what I'm getting myself into. In the car the hills appeared enormous to me, not so bad actually running it.....maybe you can take your bike out of the car and ride up the biggest hill to get your confidence up.

FWIW...I'm riding a supposedly hard bike course this weekend also. DH wants me to hammer the bike and see "if" I can still run....sounds fun, eh? I usually do the opposite, ease the bike to make sure I FINISH upright

My biggest concern is being int he last swim wave, the past two years I nearly missed the bike cut off. Slow swim+okay bike=very close!!! And now the unknown bike course... I'll feel better tomorrow after we drive it. Luckily, I'm very busy the rest of today so shouldn't have much time to fret.
