Wow, I am very careful when it comes to Injuries or any pain at all, so I like to nip it in the bud. So in 36 years of running i've had one chronic injury (lasting more than one month) I had some Periformis tightness so went

right to the pool.

I just got done with 3 weeks of aqua Jogging and I had a major INCREASE in my fitness. I was much faster, stronger with better endurance when I went back to running!

That is awesome!!! It's funny. Over the last 6 months I have incorporated strength training into my regimen and have been running less but my running speed and fitness has maintained. I think that is a direct correlation with the strenght and plyo I have been doing.

Rainey, can you give us a little more detail about your aqua-jogging workouts? Duration, what type of flotation device, any resistance aids, boredom relief techniques, etc? I tried it once and must have been doing something wrong because after 20 minutes (the most my brain could endure) I wasn't even breathing hard.

Not saying I'm some kind of aqua-jogging uber-stud (far from), just wondering how a person gets a solid workout from it.

I use a standard aquajoging vest like the one in the photo on this website http://www.aquajogger.com/

First of all deep pool, feet do not touch at all. NO IMPACT YOU CAN DO THIS WITH BROKEN LEGS.

i DID IT WITH A DISC PROTRUSION WITH NEUROLOGICAL COMPRONISE FOOT DROP AND WEAKNESS.

(12 years ago avoided surgery, it did take some intensive rehab)

I use a movement much bigger than standard running. hand all the way to shoulder height than down to waist, leg higher= knee to waist

and extend all the way back use breath as a guide, not sure of cadence but probably the same as an all out sprint on land.

I alternate with some cross county skiing type movements legs straight arms straight opposing

45 minutes non stop. Absolute killer, when you get out it is hard to walk, legs feel 2 times normal weight. Way harder than 45 minutes on land

at training pace maybe equivalent to a race pace 10k.

Boredom? SORT OF but I go during masters swim sometimes and I enjoy admiring the bodies, people watching etc. I was thinking about bringing a boombox,

waterproof headphones could be an option.

I don't know about your pool but mine Culver City Plunge has some bodies in AMAZING SHAPE. I was commenting to the lifeguard-

who is that?, she looks like she is carved out of marble, triathlete, fitness model, who knows. Yes folks there are some perfect bodies!

I am not talking about a marginal improvement in fitness I am talking about a quantum leap!

I am set on 1-2 times per week indefinately

I looked on the internet for a video and in my opinion no one has it right. motion too small, shallow water. one she had the vest upside down! I may have to make a video. I have been doing this for 15 years and it head and shoulders better than any other alternative such as eliptical etc.

Good for you Rainey, impressive results! Not that I did aqua jogging for any significant length of time, but I did get some serious workout out of it when I couldn't run on the solid surface. Literally dripping with so much sweat on my face. The only way to entertain myself was to stare at pool clock and did lots of hard HARD intervals. Never knew one full minute was that short. Wouldn't it be cool to have a group workout ?

I understand that the New York road runners has a deep water running program (or used too anyway) By the title I guess they are doing it correctly. The videos on the Internet that I've seen are not Aqua Jogging but shallow pool running.

Found this on the internet the other day, Pfitzinger's 9 week water running schedule:

I think I picked it off of a post in the Boston Marathon form over at Runner's World.

Haven't looked around on the Pfitzinger site to see if there is any info regarding technique, though.
