<p>Thinking about getting a Long Haul Trucker to be used as a commuter in spring & summer, then stripped down to be a cyclocross bike in fall.  Would that be a decent cross bike?  If I'm not mistaken, JRoden was riding a LHT as a winter bike a while back...?  My thinking is that someday, when I'm done with all this racing and commuting nonsense, I'd have myself a real nice touring bike.  Best compromise bike around, maybe?</p>

<p>Side question - Is a 650c wheel the same as a 26" wheel?  The LHT is offered in a 26" version for the smaller frames, which would be great if I could swap with my tri-bike wheels.  Wheel sizes are so damn baffling, though.  Help?!</p>

<p>I'm pretty sure JRoden has a Surly LHT as his winter commuter - as you already noted. Other than that, don't remember anyone mentioning them.</p>

<p>i have one, it's a nice commuter or winter training bike as it has fender mounts and lots of room for fat tires and can run either canti or regualr brakes.  It comes in few sizes so it has to fit you.  It's a freaking tank, mine weighs maybe 26 pounds.  I can't imagine wanting to cyclocross on such a zepplin, but it will take tires of sufficient size (say 30-32) and will have enough mud clearance so perhaps you will enjoy the experience.</p>

<p>It's a lot nicer bike to road ride than a cross bike with the long wheelbase and slack angles and low bottom bracket.  It's a nice bike and pretty cheap.</p>

Good info, thanks for chiming in.  Maybe I'll look for their Cross Check instead - it appears to have rack lugs and fender mounts, plus a bit more aggressive frame geometry.</p>

<p>the cross checkl is also a tank, maybe a redline or kona is a better bet.  Any cross bike has a higher standover so will be more top heavy.</p>

<p>You can put tractor tires on it and the bottom bracket is super low.  You have to use a wide BB with it.</p>
