Who watches? I watch it with my kids - we're addicted.

Did you catch last night's audition show?

First, I wonder about the actual logistics of these things. They've got 10's of thousands of people in these arenas - no way they all file through the celebrity judges, right? So they must have "screeners" who do the first rounds and presumably select the best and worst to move on to the celebrity rounds? Ya think? I think it's a pretty mean system. The folks that suck should just be sent home. The poor tour guide guy last night - he thought he was great!! I feel for him. And the poor girl singing for her (very large) mom - geeez. We're supposed to enjoy these people getting trashed?

I really liked three: the guy doing Uncle Kracker (despite the questionable message of the song I really like it too which probably helped), the young woman with the challenged daughter, and the woman training for cage fighting (though her twang detracted from it for me).

Who'd you like? Who'd you hate? You like the really bad folks?

Oh it is all of publicity. The worse the people the show the more people get hooked. I only watch the first several weeks for the stupid people willing to embarrass themselves.

I really like the guy that did the Love song to Paula!

What did you think about the guy that went back in a second time? He had all his hair on his body removed after the first audition and went back in for a second.

While I enjoy the occasional bad singer, I'd much rather they show as many of the people being put through to Hollywood as possible. It really sucks when you get to the final 24 and there are performers who have never been shown before.

I was very happy that the woman with the challenged daughter made it. If she had been one of the really sh!tty performers, I might not have watched the show again this season. To tug at viewers' heart strings and then humiliate her would have been too much.

I liked the 'No sex' song. I was amazed they let the "stalker" guy go as long as they did without tackling him to the ground.

I am also so VERY VERY thankful that I can't grow chest hair. I think that one falls under cruel and unusual punishment.

I do watch it--and like the auditions better than the show itself--so I will watch the people until the final contestants are picked than, I could care less---I do the same thing with "so you think you can dance"---gets boring for me once the "talent" is disovered..lol

You're right, there is an initial screening (that's what all the people in the arena were there for). Then if you get picked you have to go back at a later date to sing for Simon, Paula and Randy.

Okay, that guy was a freak. DD declared him a potential rapist. Gave all of us the heebie-jeebies.

I too liked the cage fighter from Oregon and that exotic looking guy with the dreads.

And really- what was up with the possessed glittery woman?

My brother used to be in a Boyz 2 Men style singing group and knew one of the competitors from last year (Sway Penala). I've also ended up riding in a carpool with one of the folks who made to final 100 or so invitees (don't know if you remember him, but he mentioned he could sing in Chinese, was asked to, and did a pretty good job of it; didn't make the final group.)

It's pretty much what's been described - there's a first and then a second screening, then the final group (the good and the horrid) that goes in to see the big three for their commentary.

Wow - I've never wandered in this forum before but the thread caught my attention, so pardon the intrusion

I caught a few glimpses here and there as I was channel surfing. I can only take american stupidity in small doses and since the vast majority of those auditioning (and the ones they seem to like to focus on during these auditions ) fall in the 'stupid' category, I don't usually watch the entire thing. BUT, I did happen to see the Uncle Kracker guy - and thought he was good. And the girl from Selma, OR (that sold her horse to get a ticket to Philly. And was she also the cage fighter girl??), that sang "Amazing Grace" was phenomenal. And she only lives in the next town over from me - about 10 miles away - so I'd like to keep tabs on how far she goes.

ok - the guy who came back after waxing himself?? PRIME example of american stupidity! LOL

Those wackos are the main idea behind the auditions. Does anybody care about the good singers now? I usually fast-forward once a decent one starts singing. I love these auditions.... then I don't watch for a few weeks until they're down to about 10 people.

we watch it...more so once they get to hollywood...but I think they all sing the same "initial screening song"...if you notice after each city they go to, they put together a song with all the best and worst of the auditions, but they clip together all the contestants singing the same song...I think that's the first thing they do...and THEN they go see the judges...

Stalker - Creepy. I'm actually surprised they let him go on for so long
Chest hair dude - Eew. I'm also glad BrewDad can't grow chest hair.
Princess Leia - Delusional. Come on. It's been 6 seasons already. Haven't you figured out they don't want unique? They want malleable clay. If you want unique, start an indie band or something; however that does assume you have a smidge of talent.

I actually liked that they showed more of the decent singers last night. Last season was too heavy on the crap singers so when they finally got to Hollywood it was a "don't care, meh" fest.

I liked the young woman from Chicago with the disabled DD. The others were just OK. The cage fighter had a good lower range but then she started getting nasally as she got higher. As BrewDad will tell you, nasally singers are akin to fingers on a chalkboard for me. I do remember the Uncle Kracker guy but none of the guys last night were all that memorable overall.

This is what's been good about the last two seasons of Australian Idol - they've let in people who are a bit different and have real talent. Particularly the 2006 season - there were a couple of amazing performers on that show that were so not what you expect to see on Idol. They even had a special show were they got to sing their own material. Of course, they still let a few gumbies who can't hold a tune into the final 12!

Anybody thought the last guy was actually pretty entertaining? Wanna bet this song is gonna be on the radio tomorrow and he might end up as the new William Hung?
