I did an Oly. length triathlon this weekend and it was a USAT event.

I was a little shocked to find out I was 3rd in division since I am a super slow swimmer and never expect to place in anything with a swim over 500 meters...I'm just a super slow swimmer and the longer the swim, the farther I get behind. I was quite sure there weren't too many in my division beings as I actually did place, and i was right. There were only 8.

Anyhow, anxious to know how my bike/run time compared to others, i emailed the director for the results. They have not posted yet, but he sent me the results and I was actually in second place. Even more interesting was the swim time of the gal who won my division as it was 15 minutes for a 1500 meter swim which i thought was pretty impressive especially since the wind conditions were horrible and there was more chop in that water than any ocean swim I had ever done and it was in a lake...actually that would have made her the fastest swimmer in the whole field which I found to be a bit suspect. I looked up last years time and sure enough she did the same swim last last year in 50 minutes and came in dead last. Anyhow it is obvious that she only did the sprint course for the swim and the referees did not catch her.

I emailed the director and asked why I was listed as 2nd place, when i only got 3rd and to alert him of the obvious error of the swimmer who took 1st. He told me that the lady in 1st was an overall female winner and was removed from the age groupers and that I did indeed get 2nd place and he would mail me the award...as for the gal now in 1st, he said his referees must have overlooked the infraction as they were more concerned about safety in the bad conditions.

I think if this was a little community event I wouldn't be so annoyed. I don't care about the actual award, but it is a USAT event and I think people in my division that did the course in it's entirety should be given their correct standings. I requested that they should at least call her on it and ask if it is possible that she accidentally did the short course. Am I being unreasonable?

I don't think your being unreasonable at all. It sounds to me like you discovered an obvious error in the standings and it should be fixed. Good Luck!

p.s. Which race was it?

I don't think that's being a baby at all. You're pointing out an obvious discrepancy in the results, and trying to have the results brought in line with reality. Good luck!

Its sad that some people are quite happy taking credit for something they did not do by the rules. She obviously knows what happened as she got 1st place hardware. It would be nice to think she would be honest about and not accept the award. No shame in cutting the course if the conditions were bad and she was concerned and wanted to come in and just 'finish the race'. But you dont take credit for a 15 min oly swim!

Just reminds me of doing the FL 70.3 two years ago and watching a peleton ride by while I am trying to pedal into the wind on my own. And these were very competetive guys that knew what they were doing. Probably trying to qualify for Kona and dont care how they get there.

I dont blame you at all. Nice race!!

That is world record pace for the swim. She should be DQ'd or step up and remove herself.

The same type of thing happened 2 years ago at Miami Man. the guy that beat me actually beat me on the bike. Yeah right.

Anyway, congrats on the award and great race. Your legs are holding on, so you should be happy about that at least.

I'm glad TriBob pointed out the world record factor. I was thinking the same thing as I read the posts. The race officials must be asleep at the wheel. Seems they should have caught that.

You're not "a baby" for demanding fairness.

I don't think you're being a baby at all. If I did that race and saw those results, I would be saying something too, even though I'm BOP.

Thanks for all the kind words and input. Wow, i didn't realize she set a world record.

Left Right Repeat...It isn't just about me. There were others pushed out of their rightful positions and we pay extra money for USAT races because they are supposed to adhere to stricter standards.

The director emailed me back and he is going to contact her and ask if she accidentally cut the course short a bit.

Stu...it was Lake Havasu Triathlon....20mph winds and a struggle just to keep the bike on 2 wheels...Beautiful weather though.

Fair is fair. You did the right thing. Her not having done that swim would mess up everyone else's results and that wouldn't be right.

Congrats on your AG placement ... great race! Keep us posted ...

Not a baby at all. We all have a right to fair results. Congrats on the placing!

PS: There is a way to have a near-WR oly swim....do it downriver in swift current. I clocked at just over 20 minutes for 1500 m last year, about 9 minutes off my pool time.

To echo all the others, you're definitely not being unreasonable. Getting the record straight would be important for all the competitors by my thinking

And obviously, huge congrats on the AG placement!
