Tossed this Oly on at the last minute as a way to round out my 2010 tri season.

Photos can be seen here by searching for Bib 87. And, for the curious, UberGirl is Bib 92.

1 km swim, 29 mile bike, 10 km run.

Goals: MOP or better on the swim, 20 mph on the bike, run hard, finish in top 20.

Actual: 37/103 swim, 19.95 mph bike, ran hard, finished 23/103 overall (3/7 AG)

This was a good race - I'm sorry that I don't have pictures, it was a pretty course. But I was flying solo and forgot the camera. I'll come back to post links to the race photographer's site when those come online.

The swim started in very shallow water along the shore of the Columbia River, just downstream from The Dalles dam. Easy course, straight out to buoy #1 (running at first, then eventually swimming when it was deep enough), downriver to buoy #2, and in to the finish arch. I hadn't noticed the course description stating the swim was only 1 km, so was quite surprised how quickly it was over. We were very lucky in that the winds that normally rip through the Columbia Gorge were non-existent for a change.

The bike was great if you enjoy loooooong gradual climbs. We spent most of the time noodling our way up a small, pretty canyon. I passed lots of folks in the first few miles, then pretty much lost contact with everyone for the next several miles, which feels like an awful long time to be all alone on a race course. Eventually I was caught by another rider and did a double-take when I realized it was a woman. Considering the men and women had separate waves, it meant she was 5 minutes ahead of me less than halfway through the bike course. Dayum! She was ripped, too. I tried to stay with her (duh) but she steadily widened the gap as we headed into rolling terrain through the wheat fields. Other than the mile or two in town I think I only saw a single vehicle on the course. Eventually we began the descent back down to the river and oh boy, was it fast. Several miles of pedaling 100+ rpm in the 53/11 combo and hanging on for dear life. About a mile or so from T2 who should I pass but uber-stud-woman! We entered transition together, I complimented her bike performance, and then I (temporarily) ditched her.

I knew she'd catch me on the run, and of course she did. The run course follows a meandering route consisting of a mix of paved multi-use path, sidewalks, and a couple short sections of industrial road. It was mostly along the river, though, so was quite pleasant. I was running pretty well, holding my position other than uber-stud-woman, and counted 22 people ahead of me at the turnaround. One was female, though, which meant I was probably in 23rd position. Once again, about a mile from the finish I caught and passed UberGirl as I dialed up the intensity to 11. Came in to the finish, wobbled around, and proceeded to drink about 50 ounces of fluids - guess it was warmer than I realized!

The city Parks & Rec department sponsors the race (how cool is that?) and arranged for a local catering company to provide sack lunches for everyone. Awesome!

Analysis: It is taking me much longer to improve at this sport than I thought it would, but with races like this one every so often, it's pretty hard to complain very much. Fun day. Swam okay, biked hard (18th bike split), held my position on the run. I'll take it.

Nice one Matt! The only reason I didn't pick this race last weekend was the lack of desire to do the same I-84 drive to a race again. Well done on another fine tri season!

Dude, good race. Weird distances though. We have that problem whenever there is a park districts are involved. No respect I tell ya!

So, what uber-woman hot? ;-p

Nice race Matt! 20 mph is pretty solid on what sounds like a pretty hilly bike course.

You said at the turn-around that there were 22 people in front of you and you passed UberGirl about a mile from the finish, and ended up in 23rd place. Did you get passed by someone else?

Very solid race and hardware to boot!

It is tough being out there on the bike by yourself for so long, no one to target and pick off as you go along. Good thing that girl came along to give you something to chase after. Great job!

Nice job!!!! Sounds like a beautiful race, that's still one of my most favorite parts of the country. I can't imagine swimming in that river though, when we were there for DH to windsurf (Hood River), the current was ripping!! Congrats~

Thanks everyone. Yep, 3rd in age group. I'm getting jaded, though. 3rd in age group? -yawn-

AK - There was another woman 4:30 behind me, which means she beat me by 30 seconds. What a bitch.

Post race libation was Pinot Grigio. Nothing fancy.

LOL! Yeah, okay, good point. Except it's not like I'd been sitting around all summer and decided to get off the couch. Truthfully, I decided to do one more tri for the season because I knew I was at the very peak of my fitness for the year. Might as well put it to some use before the fall/winter doldrums, right?

Agreed -- there is nothing worse then putting in a whole season of training and racing without anymore racing.

Sounds like a solid performance on your side. If anything, it sounds like perhaps you are thinking twice about where you want to be rather than where you are and what you've done. And what's cool is that although you might be slightly put off (re: comment about how long it takes to get where you want), you have it all in proper perspective, because a day like that -- nice course, great people, solid performance, etc -- is why we come back for more. Knowing your affinity for crazy hard bike courses, and knowing that you are peaking (or at least very fast right now) on the bike, I'd say a 20 mph average on this course shows that it is a tough 29 miles. Way to hold your own on the run, too!

Great job Matt! uber studded woman, that's gotta be nice I know what you mean about taking longer to improve than you thought. Good news is you have plenty of time where you can still get much faster, you've got a lot of good years left!

It's there, just a little hard to see. 2nd line of the race report. I bolded the first part to help with the visibility.
