So we had Atheist, and we had Theist.

Can we get a Agnostic thread up in this bitch.
I've heard a few different definitions of the word agnostic, each representing a disparate set of concepts and causes.

1) An agnostic wants to believe in God but cannot.
2) An agnostic doesn't believe that man has the capacity to assume the existence of God, because man's existence is exclusively temporal, and God's atemporal.
3) An agnostic doesn't believe there is conclusive proof either way to prove or disprove the existence of a higher power.
4) An agnostic exercises healthy skepticism in their faith as well as their doubt.

Let's hear it for the agnostics!

o hai!

those are pretty much bang-on with me except for the first one...the question of the existance of a "god" isnt very high on my list of priorities as is squandering my time on this planet in every way possible

One might argue that God created man with higher reasoning skills. It is a grave violation of this gift to not use it to wax theologically.

I think maybe 2~4
1 not so much

But for me, I guess I'm just too lazy. I got enough on my plate without actively seeking answers (for or against)

Well- those were just definitions that I remember of what an agnostic is. I have to admit- I find the first a little odd - but there are days when I think it suits me to a "T"

I consider myself agnostic - I think I believe in God more because that was how I was raised, and am open to the concept that there is no God.

The God I believe in isn't anything I can come close to understanding in a meaningful way, so who am I to say that anyone else's concept of God is wrong?

That sums me up pretty well. Raised as a Christian, I really want to believe and if it is possible to be 90 percent sure about something then that is where I am. I have issues with the physical, literal things in the bible. I simply cant picture a man turning a staff into a snake, literally. Imagine that happening before your very eyes. I did witness my Grandfather ,who was a agnostic after surviving a POW camp during WWII, be baptized at the age of 86 after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. The peace it brought him and my family was something that I feel only Jesus could have. I dont know but what a topic for us late nighters.

Occam's razor leans me toward atheism. Of course no one can prove God does not exist but it seems more likely for us to attempt to look for the intentional in nature rather than to look for nature in the intentional and, therefore, to create an imaginative, intentional being who imposes His will on the world.

Over the years I tried to be agnostic and even toyed with atheism but probably in part to my Southern Baptist roots have never quite been able to not have faith. When I was in ICU a couple years ago I decided God was firing a warning shot across my brow so I reexamined my beliefs and faith and acted accordingly. Not that I still don't question a few things in life.

No, then the thread title would have been Bitch Thread.

See- and the Agnostic in me sees it as Allegorical. This concept of God really is allegorical of what binds us as mankind and makes us similar - Makes us a brotherhood.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you looking for exceptions on why it doesn't work- then yes there will absolutely always be those.

If you're looking for representations of God's will and his glory- then you don't have to look far for those either- and they will always exist.

Interesting take. Does this mean you've made up your mind?

I guess I also see faith as an intellectual and psychological process. Faith is not- nor was it ever supposed to be a straight road. It's supposed to be a winding road. Anyone who tells you their faith or lack of it has never wavered isn't doing it right. Some times I feel inspired by God's great creation. Some days I can't get away from the thought that we're anything but alone. Some days- Even when I'm standing in Synagogue supposedly praying- I'm there head bowed in silence thinking to myself you don't exist. I feel silly.

If God doesn't exist- who the fuck am I talking to?

That would leave us talking only with each other. And that's not a very comforting thought.
