We got a treadmill at the beginning of the year and so DH, who doesn't necessarily exercise on a regular basis but is a naturally fit guy, decided to start running. His initial goal is to build up to running 5 k. He has no long term goals at this point and can't see himself ever running anything longer than a 5 or 10 k race anyway. I suggested, since he is new to running, that he do the C25k program which I find is quite good for beginners as it is quite gradual in building up to the 5 k distance. Nope, not interested. Wants to do things his way so instead, 3x a week he does intervals with the running at an 8:35 pace. The last time he ran I think he was down to 5 minutes of running with 1 minute of walking in between. He always completes 5 km in each session.

So, now he is complaining that his knees are sore...vague soreness all day behind the knee cap that gets worse when he runs. I have told him that two primary causes are likely his crappy running shoes and the fact that he is running too fast too soon. I don't know why he feels like he has to go balls out when he is running and I'm having trouble convincing him otherwise. He is discouraged and I would like to help him but not sure how. Suggestions?

Might I suggest trying to talk with this? You might have better results.

What he wants to hear:

The pain will go away all on its own as soon as he toughens up and picks up his pace.

What he needs to hear:

The pain will only get worse if he keeps trying to run faster and farther.

What he will actually hear:

The pain will go away blah blah blah if he keeps trying to run faster and farther.

Husband, husband, husband........ isn't it funny every husband is unique, but they share something in common. What Matt said.

I am getting better at closing my mouth and not giving my opinion about running, even when my husband ASKS FOR IT. After he (who has run only once during the last month or so?!) ran 16miles or so last Sat. with somebody who was training for Boston, he was complaining about being tired and sore and asked for my opinion. Did I say something? No, I smiled, kissed his cheek, and said 'oh, honey, you will feel better soon.".

Yep Matt is right but I don't want to hear him complain about his knees so I have trouble keeping my mouth shut. I also don't want him to just throw in the towel and then claim "running is bad for your knees". Maybe he just needs to learn this lesson himself. If I can persuade him to go get properly fitting shoes that may just be half the battle.

Tell him there will be a "super special surprise" (wink wink nudge nudge) if he gets some SEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXY new running shoes at the nice store you recommend. Cuz they make you SO incredibly turned on cuz he is such an amazing natural. And tell him "it just amazes me how much awesome willpower it takes to follow something like c25k, because it's just so mentally tough most guys could never pull it off. They're just weak. I bet you have what it takes, but THEY sure don't. wusses."

Another approach - if you did the C25k there might be some food/toy/sex/gun/video game in it for you

Yes, we men really are pretty simple and ego strokes and bribes do work pretty well. But hey, you have kiddos. Apply the same principles you use there to get them to do what you want - except the screaming and nagging doesn't work (will have negative effect) and you can offer up a more complex array of bribes

Oh God I could not do this without busting out in laughter. Plus DH would wonder whether I had undergone some sort of alien abduction/brain transplant. I've never been good at stroking egos and luckily DH doesn't need/want it. Seriously, he is difficult to motivate and the tactics I use on the kids really aren't effective. The only thing that will likely work would be to taunt him with the fact that unless he trains properly he'll never kick my a$$ in a 5k race.
But he most likely thinks it's one cute a$$ that he won't mind following for 5K...

Truth is he's a boob man so he'd probably enjoy beating me to the finish line and watching me run in toward him!

I like this guy. Reminds me of myself. I posted a picture of myself on fb awhile ago about 50 pounds heavier than i am now. Could not run a mile. I signed up for a marathon 6 months out..... 6 months. Never ran any type of race. I decided i wanted to run 330. You know what I did i got a tm and ran my 8min miles until i fell off. That lasted seconds. I kept doing that, the 50 pounds melted away. I rAn a hilly first marathon in Wisconsin, and i ran 336. I never ran as a youth, never as an adult. I wAs 33 years old. I just laugh when i hear people sAy, oh... You need to do it this way, oh 10 percent rule... Ha.... The human body can do ANYTHING the mind sets it to doing.

Now that I'm done patting myself on the back, i like his approach. I wish people would do more of what they believe thAn what they read about. The only thing i did extra was stretch religously before and after. I followed a bob glover protocol. Something i should start up again. Tell him go big or don't bother! .

Well then there you have it! His motivation is to train properly so that he can beat you so he can see the girls bouncing towards him. BD's a butt man so he'd finish then double back.

See, I think he could "muscle" his way through it like you did Scott. Physically he's very similar to you, 5'6", 135 lbs, high energy kind of guy. I actually think he would be a very good 5k runner.

extra weak. Scott just put up more watts than when he was 10 pounds heavier. When scott is injuried that's 2 days off... thanks for 8 IMs, and multiple ultras of the 50mile variety in the last 3 years... but thanks for stopping by.
