Found a two year old Bouvier on craigslist. Drove over two hours to pick her up.

Adopted her at the worst possible time with all that's going on in our home right now.

She is an amazing girl, though. I can't imagine her not being in my life.

Her name is Sophie. So much for not ever getting a big dog again. She weighs near 90 pounds

and is built like a cinder block on legs.

I shouldn't have opened this thread. A big goofy dog came over to me at the end of my run, whole body was wagging. She wanted to run with me. I miss my dog!

I wish my little westie-poo could run distances, but she's just too little. We'll walk around the lake (less than 2 miles) and she'll be pooped. Those little legs...

Yeah, Westie's have a cute face. I'm glad our dog got the Westie part of the face, plus the longer nose of the poodle. And she has hair, rather than fur, which is nice. Easier to clean up.

Sadly, she didn't get the poodle smarts...got the westie dumbness. And the westie barking part. She friggin' barks at everything.

Tech--if your dog barks at "everything", it's way smarter than my collie. Dumb thing lays there and barks, just for the sake of barking.

That is funny as hell.

Took her to get spayed yesterday and all was fine and dandy until this morning.

I noticed there were huge drops of dark red blood underneath her. I figured she popped a stitch or a staple.

By the time we got to the vet, blood was dripping pretty freely.

Turns out she popped an internal stitch this am on a major vessel leading from her former ovary and had bled out into her stomach cavity.

The vet said it scared her to death and she's been doing this for 30 years.

Vet fixed it and has kept Sophie overnight. Fortunately she didn't need a blood transfusion, but just barely.

She's been given valium and will be given more pain meds and antibiotics.

Close call.

Yowsa! That's scary.

Too much to deal with in too short of a time.

BTW, our 14 year old kitty died on Tuesday morning. Sucks. I think the kids are taking it better than I am. But, then again, being the Dad, I'm the one who had to sit up TWO nights and one day with her as she was dying, and I'm the one who had to find her "passed" in the morning, and had to deal with her remains, and I'm the one who had to intern her. They just let me deal with all that stuff.

The dog? I'm not even sure she notices.

I'm so sorry. There is something special about a kitty. Especially one you've had for 14 years.

She was lucky to have you!!!

That's what DW said. She was lucky to have gotten us (we got her from the pound), and we were lucky to have her. She was the most friendly cat I ever knew. Most cats...well, they can be a little (hell of a lot) aloof.\

It's interesting...As an adult, I've had a few pets.

Pet # 1, cat. The cat disappeared one night. We searched the neighborhood for a flattened cat. Couldn't find her. Didn't bother me that much, although I really liked her. I think that she actually decided to leave...instead of getting killed somehow.

Pet # 2, dog...a beautiful black lab. She had a biting issue. So, at 7 years old, I had to take her to the vet to be put down. I was crying as I walked out of the office. She never touched us, or any of my children...but people over the fence, regardless of who...they were fair game...

Pet # 3, cat...she wasn't the smartest in the bunch. I liked her. Very sweet cat. We had her for over a year. I found her squished on the main road a block from the house. it was odd...because she never left the yard. Don't know.

Pet # 4...the current cat. You know the story.

What bothered me the most? The dog, and pet # 4...which I think, is because I directly caused, or saw, or had something to do with their passing.

Cool dog.

Here's our pair of loonies doing battle.

Callee the boxer = 45 lbs of pure muscle and very smart

Powie the shepherd = 100 lbs of pure lunacy, very smart but full of stupid dog tricks.

We had to put down my beloved Airedale due to dementia. That was tough, as her body was physically perfect.

On top of other freaky things she was doing, she would come out of a deep sleep and try to bite little dog. (They were pals, even slept together) One day

she bit my face by accident b/c little dog was by me. No broken skin, but even accidental intent was enough. We knew that

she would never hurt me as she had always been so protective, so we knew she wasn't in her right mind.

We also decided to take her before the situation got really bad or little dog got really injured. We wanted to go out with positive memories.

It was one of the toughest things, ever.

And the dog that passed last month? That was tough b/c during the final injection he had a seizure, horrible thing to watch.

Nothing mitigates the guilt and horror you feel at making that choice about a pet you love.

Rob--your two are adorable!!! I love Boxers!!!

And Powie is just beautiful!

Update: Stitches are out, took her to a dog park today and she had a great time.

I wonder about her previous life as she doesn't understand toys or how to play with other dogs.

Here's a new pic:

Yikes on the surgery horror story! I used to be a vet tech. We had a male dog do something similar, and of course it was a Doberman with Vonwillibrons (horribly misspelled--clotting disorder). Scary, scary stuff.

My Great Pyrenees didn't understand toys. We got her a big squeaky toy. She wanted to carry it behind the couch but every time she picked it up it squeaked which confused her. She never did figure out dog toys. She and the collie did learn to play. Looked much like RFH's photo, except in our (tiny!) living room.
