Hi all!

Decided to join the trail group at dawn, but the regular crew that I've chased twice now weren't there. A couple I'd met some time back got there as I waited, so we went out together. Unfortunately the trail was very icy, and while I had screws in my shoes, they didn't, so they bailed after just a bit over a mile. I dawdled for the next two miles, taking pictures of the early morning light over the river as I went and eventually a larger group caught up with me. Aha! Finally I link up with the group I've been wanting to join for some time! I ran with them for a couple of miles until they turned back, and I continued on to my turn-around point.

TW - good pool workout I see

Hi ya Rip

My calves are so sore from being on the elliptical yesterday!!! So today I did a "rolling hill" workout on the stationary bike for 48 mins. I set the rate high enough that it was difficult on the second hill. Hope to walk later with dw.

"Coffee is it's Own Reward" - totally agree with you on that TW!

That's a pretty picture, Heme.

Well I bailed on my 10 miler after just 5 miles. Somewhere in the 4th mile, going up a steep hill, I got a stab in my left arch that wouldn't quit. I kept run/walking til 5 and then called for a ride home. I just hope I didn't tear it. There's a visible knot - but that's been there off and on over the last month or so. I've iced it for the last 40 minutes and plan to do that every few hours today and tomorrow. I just hate that my "good foot" has gone bad on me! No doubt from overworking it...shouldna done "rolling hills" the day after "big hills."

Hope your foot gets better quickly HF.

Hi KS

I did my 17 miles today but it wasn't pretty. Walked in the fitness center and it was even warmer than yesterday. 76°!!

I started with 3 miles flat before starting the hills. I alternated .5 miles at 12% incline and .6 miles at 10% incline each mile

with the recovery at 8 minute pace. I did the hills a little slower than my last similar workout because of the heat and extra distance

I wanted to run. I even took a water bottle with me which I haven't done in years and it really helped. I got through 2 hours going 12.8 miles

and gaining 3,430 ft elevation. I had to take a 10 minute break to cool down, get rehydrated and change my shirt. I started back slowly and

worked my way down to 7:30 pace to do the last 4.2 miles at 8 minute pace. The run was 2:33 not counting the break so right at 9 minute pace

overall. Refueled with a mushroom swiss burger and apple pie at Burger King. Legs feel good except for that pesky ITband on my right leg that is always

sore for a couple days after these long runs.

Yeah can't talk now - still holding my breath on this one.

I've only aborted a run and called for a ride home twice in my entire life before this. Gives you an idea...but I've iced several times today and we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Good going on your own long run, Rip. Smart to drink water with all that work and 76°!!

I guess I'd need more details to try that. My shoes are too snug to stuff anything into. I'm (of course) wearing my orthotics and my running shoes full-time for now - no slippers for me this morning as I gimp around. The lump is still there, big as ever, right in the middle of my plantar fascia cord. Haven't iced yet today, but put Voltaren gel on last night and this morning.

ETA: so TW do you think I should be keeping the foot rigid and not flexing it at all when I walk around? that's why the "air-cast"?

That's cool about the geese landing as you finished your run, TW.

HappyFeat, "a visible knot" on my foot that lasted more than 24 hours would be a signal for me to go visit my preferred healthcare provider - physician, chiropractor, veternarian, pharmacist, witchdoctor, or whatever.

nice hill run, Rip.

KS, I've tried going to spinning classes with my wife and the artificial enthusiasm and day-camp follow-the-leader atmosphere are a real turn off for me.

Pt - My gym workouts were not group workouts fortunately and they are just till I'm running again.

HappyFeat - I don't know about keeping your foot rigid but some time off till that knot goes away?

Pretty much 1 week without running. I'm going to wait another week before I start running again; at least. It took all my will power not to run a block yesterday while walking with Julie and the dogs.

You are so right - That's pretty clear cut right now given the discomfort with just walking on it. I've looked up a tear/rupture on the Academy of Ortho and Mayo Clinic websites and they don't recommend anything more than whatchya do for plantar fasciitis. There's no way I'm going for a cortisone shot, so I just need to lay off running for a bit, ice, stretch, use the antiinflammatory gel and hope for a quick recovery.

Ouch, HF! I tend to agree with the rest, especially PT. Get that checked out!

PT, I do spin classes, but ours morning ones tend to be rather low-key and chatty. I don't respond well to the high energy ones as I tend to not do what I'm told.

Good plan, KS.

I didn't run today either, but it was a scheduled day off anyway. Should have tried to go nordic skiiing, as I noticed there was still a fair bit of snow still in the bush yesterday, but DH and I both slept in and between clearing the last of the Xmas stuff up and wrestling a big overgrown burro tail succulent into submission (OK, mostly cleaning up the aftermath!), the afternoon was gone.

So I consulted my friendly local orthopedic Physician Assistant this afternoon who recommended RICE and patience, along with getting together for a medicinal glass o'wine.

(RICE = rest, ice, compression, elevation)
