Bernard Callebaut goes under

Victim of a bad business decision to buy land just before the start of that little "market correction" we've all been through. He vows he'll be making chocolate again. We can only hope.

This is a trajedy. Like many businesses, Callebaut simply expanded too fast and at the wrong time. He probably can make a comeback on a much smaller scale since he knows the industry so well and has had success in the past.

Just a sign of the unfortunate times we are in. I have my suspicions many more such businesses will go under and/or change dramatically before these economic times see brighter and bluer skies.

I think you're right on that score Reb. He did grow too big too fast and while he had a great product it really isn't an essential and during a recession his revenue dipped and he couldn't cover the costs of the expansion.

I wonder though at the whole receivership game, he had people willing to back him to purchase back the company, and I think could have recovered shareholder value. He will return and likely be a tad slower on the re-build, but once burned, twice shy.

We used to buy his baking chocolate out of the bulk bins at Save-on-Foods for eating because we couldn't really afford his bars and the bulk stuff was damn good too.
