In my prime I tapered to 100 miles. I tried cutting to 70 miles and it didn't work. I cannot

imagine running Ed Whitlock's 80 year old mileage in my 60's.

Ed Whitlock ran 3:25 at age 80 at Rotterdam.

I was never in a school or program that got close to running 100 mile weeks let alone that being a taper week. I have in recent years run some 100 mile weeks just to say that I have done it.

I put Ed's age and time in the age grade calculator and it didn't like it. It only goes up to age 75 and that grades out at 87.5% so at 80 he has to be at 90% or above which is world class level; which we all knew. An amazing man/runner. Congratulations to him.

Hope to run 14 miles tonight. It's only 60 degrees here this morning with no wind and very low humidity. So obviously with the weather so nice I have other obligations that keep me from running on this beautiful morning.

Tuesday - Run 60 min, walk 70 min. Pain all night. My body is acting like its 63.

Fred - it could be acting like its 73 or 83.

Enjoyed the video. It must take them guys a lot of time during the day to "eat" the way they do. I'm fortunate not to be an elite.

Thanks for posting the link, Fred, I enjoyed seeing the warmup and stretching routine he used. But pancakes with no butter or syrup are not very

appealing. Beautiful rhythmic running, I wish I could run like that, even at my pace!

Hope your knee recovers soon.

No runningh for me, I have had fits of coughing that leave me completely breathless and tears in my eyes. I am getting better but about as strong as a moth- and not a big strong moth!

Wednesday - Run 0, walk 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Thursday - Run 60 min., walk 1 hour and 35 minutes total.

Cytocakes... Yum yum... [not]

Love to watch that guy run though. Will be interesting to see how he does this year.

Had some good running this week, and workouts at the gym. But my legs are tired so DH and I just did a walk around campus today at lunchtime. I might run a bit tonight on the treadmill, but might not and call it a rest day. I guess it is anyway... 5k race in the morning, but it's really hilly and still very icy out there. We walked part of the course today, and I'm sure they'll have to re-route part of it or there will be falls. I'll do some before and after for 9 or so for the day. 18 is the plan on Sunday.

"Mutai at 40km, and the time is 1:58:05, and Mutai is flying! He's going to break the course record, and run one of the fastest marathons in history! And that's off the back of a relatively conservative period from 5km to 30km - 62:44 at halfway, and the section 5km to 30km was run at 2:06:11 pace. So Mutai is going to go under 62 minutes for the second half!

Exceptional running! Martin Lel has hung in there and is second, 53 seconds down, with Makau just behind him in third. Makau will probably catch him. That means that Lel and Makau have maintained the pace and are on course for around 2:05:30, which is exactly what the halfway split predicted. So Mutai has been the man to emerge from the pack today with an outrageously fast second half. His last 5km were covered in 14:19, following on from a 14:26, and that's 2:52/km.

Mutai has won in 2:04:40, making him the fourth fastest man in history, behind Gebrselassie, Kibet and Kwambai (Geb has run faster twice, incidentally). It's a course record, and it's been achieved with a second half of 61:56, which is super quick. The final 12km, incidentally, from 30km, were covered in 35:20, which is 2:54 pace, or a 2:02 marathon!"

Awesome Fred. Thanks for the link and update.

Rest day here. Tomorrow I'll be tracking about 10 friends at Boston.

Next week a cut back week to about 60 miles.

My 21 miler Saturday was a good run and a confidence booster. 1st half ran by myself and picked up a training partner the 2nd half.

That's an amazing time (to me) for a 5k, much less the last 5k of a marathon! Wow, incredible.

My 5k was not quite so impressive, but I did get a first in my AG so that's cool. Ok, so it's not a very competitive age group, but still. I ran 23 minutes pretty much on the nose, started out a little behind the pack because I was late getting back from my (shortened) warm up. Oh well, it's all good. They did re-route the course and that added a little bit more hilly stuff, and there was still some ice so I'm happy with it. Had a nice 6 mile run afterwards with the last half all under 8's.

Today was 18 miles, and I was bored with my old route that I've been doing because everything else is so icy. Had DH drop me off in the valley north of us, and I ran along the road that more or less parallels the road I normally run on, just following the next ridge of hills. I forgot how damn hilly that road was! Still, after the fast hard run(s) yesterday, I was happy with how I did on the hills, just taking a couple breaks here and there to catch my breath and text DH to let him know how I was doing. 18 miles @ 8:09 avg pace, capping a 56 mile week. Next week should be a little more than that, with a 20 miler next Sunday. I think I'll find something a little less hilly for that one.

That's a good 18 miler Erika. You're very fit right now!!

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Boston is even more awesomer.

awesome races and some good times by people I'm tracking. Most seem to be getting faster as they run further!!

Even with a tailwind to get that 2:03, specific training had to be done to get there.

Here is that marathon training:

How can it be applied to anyone?
