Way to go Korbel! Can't wait to read your race report.

Diane: Hope your leg feels better.

Nettie: You too, take care of that stomach.

I'm new to this running stuff ... what exactly is recovery type food? I mean, I eat healthily, but I don't follow any specific running diets or anything. Please educate me.
actually...my teva sandals are about done... i'm looking for new ones to hike in... hmm....
girl...i already do!
Hey Doc, good to see ya online.
Way to go, korbel!

Had an excellent time meeting the lovely Jill this morning for our run. I was hurting this morning (migraine, stomach, hmmm sounds vaguely like a hangover) and almost bailed but I am so glad I got to meet her and get my butt out there again.

Well it took to long to catch up, now DD wants to watch a movie in her room so I have to run....
Dom - you are amazing. I can't wait to read the report, but until then I know you've made us proud!! Well done!!!
Nice work Korbel.

I'm just back in from a 36 mile bike ride with my neighbor. He's a semi-retired 53 year old dentist with a $2000+ bike. I'm a fully employed 42 year old geek with a 19 year old vintage steel Trek. Didn't matter, we had a great ride.
Great job Korbie! I am looking forward to reading that RR too!

Mary I don't think I ever gave you a shoutout for your 5 miler yesterday! Woohoo!!

It's still raining here! Yea!! We need it so bad. At first it was the torrential pouring rain, but now it's just a nice steady rain. Hopefully will get rid of all that dog poo that's been building up around the apt. complex and STINKS in the morning when I run! I''m trying to enjoy my last fading hours of relaxing while I do the laundry, dishes, make dinner, etc etc. Sigh. Might watch my netflix movie later! Would like to get the queue moving. I still have my first one from 3 weeks ago! D'oh!
Great job on the relay Korbs!!!

Very pleasant 23 mile bike ride today ...nice to give my running legs a rest but still get out there.
Good afternoon everyone. I am enjoying my first cup of coffee for the day and trying to wake up. I slept pretty good last night, but I did not want to get out of bed today.

Korbel - congrats on the relay. I can't wait to read the full report.

Diane - I hope your leg feels better soon.

Nettie - sorry to hear you don't feel well.

Well I was susposed to go shopping this afternoon for new house phones, but I don't want to go outside. It is way too darn hot.
Dom - just gonna echo what everyone has already said: made us proud. Can't wait to read the full report.
Well, there are more people on here who are WAY more qualified to answer this than I, but I will give it a shot with a quick reader's digest version.

Long running/endurance running depletes the glycogen (sp?) stores in your muscles. This is the main form of fuel. When they become depleated, your muscles start to build up lactate. After running/racing, it is necessary to fuel the body with what it needs to replenish the glycogen stores. What is needed is carbohydrates and protiens. Some (including some companies) argue that carbs and proteins should be consumed at a ratio of 4/1. 4 grams of carbs for every 1 gram of protien. This is supposed to aid with recovery and help the muscles rebuild. There are many sources and ways to accomplish this. A number of studies have shown that chocolate milk contains the right formula for this to work. Other's have found that liquid drinks like boost or ensure will work well. And, of course there are drinks on the market like endurox or various types of accelerade that claim 4/1 ratio for recovery.

McMillan has some interesting articles about this posted in the nutrition section of his web site. He also claims that 1/3 of your recovery nutrition should be liquid and occur within the 1st half hour after the event and that the other 2/3rds can come from solid foods consumed within 2 hrs of the end of the event.

Ok, guys if I'm too far off base, please correct me. This was all from books, magazine and internet articles that I have read as I have tried to get better at diet, fueling for the long run, and recovery. Personally, I think this kind of stuff does make a difference, than say, just eating whatever, with no thought given to your diet's impact on your performance.

I received a nice unexpected compliment at church today. There is a person from church who I see at the park from time to time walking. I tried to get him interested in cool runnings and the c25k program way back in March. Today in passing he said "you must be still on that cool runnings program. I can tell it's working you have lost weight." I told him I finally finished it after 5 months due to two delays with runners knee.

That was cool to get a compliment. I mentioned before I have my eyes fixed on that darn scale which tells me I have not lost a pound. Yet I am almost an inch slimmer in the waist. Anyway he's the second person, sister being the second, who said they thought I had lost weight. That's nice motivation to keep going and to be a good boy with my eating habits.
Map - I agree it is nice when people notice. Congrats.
Looks like it's a day for some nice long bike rides - just got back from a 25-miler myself through some lovely back country roads. The Thumb of God winds on the way back weren't nice, but that's the type of stuff that makes you stronger. And speaking of post-workout nutrition, In N Out Burgers have a 4:1 ratio of carbs and protein....or at least, it's nice to think they do anyway

Dom - Congrats! Sounds like you had a terrific experience - can't wait to hear the full RR from you

Get better vibes to Diane's leg and Nettie's tummy

Maples - if you keep at it, it won't be long before everyone starts noticing. For me, it was erratic notice, but then came a torrent as the transformation kept going. Keep up the good work!
Hey, all. Well, I survived the baby shower. I must say, we made out like bandits. I guess it's a good thing that Maggie has a fairly large family. I don't think we'll have to buy our daughter any clothes for a year. In fact, she might not even have to wear the same outfit twice!

Also, my mom gave Maggie the blanket and clothes that I came home from the hospital in. I can't believe my mom saved that stuff for all these years. It was a really great gift...

I spent the time hanging out with my dad and father-in-law, as well as some of Maggie's uncles and cousins whose wives were at the shower. Mostly it was a bunch of older guys talking to eachother in Portuguese. Kinda left me and my dad scratching our heads, but we survived...

Well, tomorrow is my deadline for accepting or rejecting the job offer I got. I've made up my mind to reject it, although I will be doing so with a little trepidation. I hope I'm doing the right thing...

Umm, I guess that's it. Too bad it's almost freakin' Monday again. Already. Ack.

dom I look forward to your report, though I'm afeared it may bring back some nightmares of my failed relay attempt. I've run doubles many times, but 5 runs in roughly 24 hours in heat, humidity with hills was more than Team Lactic Ass could handle!
Geez o' Pete, Dom, you are KILLIN' it with these races. I'm very impressed.

BTW, I wish I had been checking in and known you were going to do this, I totally (like totally) would have come out to cheer you through that last 4.2. I was near that area today, anyway. Moargh.

BTW, I think you came up with the t-shirt slogan. Or Voo did. Someone did.

For me, I did my 6, thank you. As long as my beak is forward, I'm fine.
Can I just say, how jealous I am of everyone's runs this weekend (yay! Dom and Prae!!!!!) esp now that i've gotten some of my running interest back, and how much it SUCKS that I couldn't run this weekend???? (I know, I could have, but trust me, I don't want this lung thing to stick around any longer than it needs to and I'm wary of running with it. Bronchial hyper responsiveness, as it's known, sucks gigantic weiners.

The golf tourney was fun. I was really really intimidated when we got to the country club (because frankly, my golfing experience is quite limited and I'm not a country club kinda gal), but I did ok and we had a good time. I can putt...who knew? And I hit a couple of nice drives and chipped a couple of shots well, so it was ok. We came in last though.
Korbel, can't wait to hear the full report!

Moe, so did you use the mouse shoes?

Thanks for all the concern about my tummy! After I took a nap, I woke up and did my 12. I took my strap-on with some diluted Gatorade Endurance and I gotta say it worked out nicely!
Hi all,

Hope you all had a great weekend.

It was warm and humid here this weekend, but I got my runs in and hit the plan for the Pfitz/Douglas 18/70 plan.

Today was my last 20+ run before the marathon in (gulp) less than 3 weeks.

For those of you who know the Pfitz plans, I completed an extended Mesocycle #3 today.

For those not familiar with Pfitz plans, let's put it simply. LET THE TAPER BEGIN.

Honestly, not a moment too soon. My legs are a bit worn out, and I'm hoping they'll bounce back a bit with the taper, and hopefully they'll be frisky for the race.

And I do have to say, there is one nice benefit of doing these runs up at the parents' cottage. When the run is over, if I'm hot and sweaty, I just go jump in the lake.

Saw a family of 8 wild turkeys on my run this morning. That was pretty cool.

Full details on Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's run can be found over in The Finish Line forum. To summarize:

Friday was 8 miles with 8x100m strides and 100m recoveries between each stride. Felt pretty good. Averaged 8:35.1 per mile, and the mile with the strides and recoveries came in at 7:20.9. It 86 degrees with a dew point in the high 60s.

Saturday was a 5 mile recovery run. Felt pretty good, but it was warm and humid and my HR went a lot higher than I would have liked. Averaged 9:32's over a very hilly course in very warm weather.

Sunday was a 20.2 mile run. I didn't run the course I wanted to run because of the humidity. I would have never gotten through the course I wanted to run as the hills on part of that course are absolute killers. As it is the course I did was very hilly. I was very slow this morning, averaging 10:23.6 per mile. Very humid for the first 12 miles or so, then the wind shifted and the humidity started coming down. Some clouds rolled in too or I would never have gotten through the final climbs.
