Hey Maria - I see you lurking - bet you are doing the same thing as me - waiting to wake up a bit before your LR. It is crzy humid here - magazies feel like they had water spilled on them. 72* w/ 94% humidity (70* dew point for scratch).

Have a greate weekends kids - I am off to sweat....
21 - 40 of 135 Posts
Brutal - and not just my early AM typing. Cut my run short (did about 12.5 instead of planned 15), was dripping with sweat about 3 minutes in, cramp or pull in my left calf, stung by a bee, and a bird crapped on me.

No, I am not kidding.
Ok, so I just skimmed the last couple of pages from last night:

Bob - good luck with Maggie's shower today. I hate going to those things, but I'm sure when you are the one getting the stuff it's fun.

quote from Cactus: "I have to say that I still laugh at your response to Voo when he said he was going to a "dumb-ass SolarPower conference".
Haha! I was just excited to have a reason to use this smiley:

Hey Litch - sweat, bees, and bird crap aside, you ran 12.5 in this this soup. Way to go!

sauconrunner If you make it into Hilton Head, go to Wild Wing Cafe and have a few Wild West, Thai, and lemon pepper wings for me. Same goes fort hose of you living in Atlanta...we had the sauce sent to our rehearsal dinnr in Oklahoma because I love it so much!

Litch Souns like an epic run...good job!

Ptom Enjoy vacation - try not to lose that emaciated/ripped look while you're gone!

Got in an easy 20 miles today - I arranged the run and we had 8 guys show up. It was fun - I hung back with the slower chaps and ran hard the last mile to get them some water and Gatoade as they were strugg-a-ling (didn't bring water belts and only got drinks at mile 10). I felt like I had another few hours in me at that pace, though it was a little warm and humid (but not nearly as bad as it's been!) I love these group long runs but it's better when everyone knows the route so you can run your own pace.

Bsy day - soccer game in a it and a birthday party for the little Pacer. See ya!

Litch - sounds like you are now disaster-proofed for the rest of the day! (And, maybe even for more than one person. . .)

It's heating up out there - even here, in the wonderful North. Sigh. . .
Well, nice lite rain and 76* here, so I'm looking foreword to my LR in a few minutes.

Good luck Prae and the rest of the racers and may everyone's long runs seem easy (whatever long is for you today).
I cried about my run into some key lime and apple turnover. I suppose the one bright side of a run like that is that probability is the next one has to be better. Need to give my body a couple days of good solid rest, though.

And one other good thing is that during the run, I set a new record for monthly mileage, I'm at 52.3 with a couple of runs remaining.
Oof. Just back from my run. Wow...

Tom, have fun on vacation! And good work getting out there for 16!

Litch, wow, what a morning! Did you tell your kids this story when you got back? If so, I guess you've just told them about the birds and the bees.

As for my run, I did successfully complete my 15-mile loop. (Well, 14.88). It wasn't terribly pleasant. Like everyone else, I ran thru humidity that could have been cut with a chainsaw. My clothes might have been made of wicking material, but they didn't wick enough. Everything was completely drenched very early on. In other words, I was sweating like at least 10 men...

Hey, I got a postcard in the mail from RoadrunnerSports telling that the Wave Rider 10 is being discontinued. Really, already? I'm still on my first pair of those. Have they already come out with WR 11s? Maybe I'm out of the loop on shoe news...

I need a cold bath and a quick nap before I help my mother-in-law set up for the baby shower. Later, folks...

Happy weekend everyone. It's raining all kinds of craziness here. When I picked up DD from day care last night, the kids were in the storm shelter! Dh is out of town for a golf tournament and DD informed me that she NEEDED DH because it was too bad of a storm for just a mommy. I really couldn't decide whether to be amused or annoyed

We're heading out for a bridal shower in a bit. I'll check back for some race reports later.

Hope everyone is well!
Good gawd! Yep I went to bed [relatively] early, yep I was up early preparing for my LR, yep I strapped on the dang Fuel Belt and got out before 6:30 a.m., and yep I was completely and totally soaked to the core by the first coupla miles. IT SUCKED. My one and only reprieve was when I crossed over the Brooklyn Bridge ...on the span it felt like someone had the A/C on high - it was heaven. And then back into foggy, humid hell. Got my 18 miles done and that's the best I can say. Actually I did have a mini burst of energy coming back over the B.Bridge, which was nice.

I'm still a little delirious ...gotta get some more food/replacements in me.

Be back later.
So after actually plotting my route this morning, it was only 11 M. Grf. Have cut my LR short now 2 weeks in a row. I am in that uncomfortable place of running more than I ever have, but not as much as I want. Gonna crush my prior monthly high (on pace for around 140, prior was 103), but it is my LRs suffereing because of it. A lot of the increase in milage is because I am running consistently 5 days/week, instead of 4. Still getting my rest in too.
Just got back from the park. OHR W1 is complete. Odd weather- the temperature (79) was equal to the humidity (79). The nice thing was the temp was a bit lower and there were very cloudy skies. That is as close as we will get to any hurricane rain. I don't know if it was the temperature drop or what but my pace was a minute and a half faster for each mile. That's with no conscious effort. It was funny I got to my normal ending distance marker and looked at the ipod and it read 27:28. So I kept chugging a little further. Well I hope you all have a great weekend. I'll be back sporatically.

Newbie question. Speaking of cooler temperatures..... is there a correlation of temperature and pace? By that I mean if it were 60 degrees with a nice cool breeze blowing would I be less drained than by my normal 90 degree muggy mornings? Logically you would say yes. Yet does that mean my pace would necessarily improve??? Todays quicker pace with lower temps just had me thinking that's all. I also realize that the longer I stick with this program and stay consistent that my pace and overall conditioning will improve. My elders I would be most curious as to your opinions on this matter.

Tim/Maria/Bob/anyone else that is running in the soup - doesn't matter if you had to cut the run short, or struggled...you were out there. You got the miles in. Excellent work my friends, excellent work.

Kini - wanted to throw my $0.02 in and echo what Diane and Beth said - you casually mentioned a 3 miler. Nice.

5 and change this morning...this first week of classes as been a kick in the ass, having trouble getting my schedule worked out was tired enough to skip two runs this week - hopefully this next week things will settle down and get back to normal a bit.

Tom/Heather - enjoy the vacations!

Tim/Scratch - nice work on setting new monthly mileage records. I've got my own record coming this month as well.

Solar/Amichel - bridal showers? don't get too crazy!

off to cover soccer practice...back later to see if there is a QOW

Doc - nice to see ya back.
Geez, I'm gonna start callin' you Schleprock!

Got my long run in. Good news is, I didn't drown. Though I think I was caught in fisherman's net and dragged to shore the last little bit. But I only did 20 miles in 3:03:21 (9:10/mile). I was hoping for at least a couple more. But, given this was my first 60-mile week, I should be satisfied with the effort.

And it was a bit warm and humid. Got out a tad later than I would've liked, about 8:30 a.m. It already was 74*F with 81 percent humidity. I think it's about 85 out now. There were some clouds covering the sun early on, so that was nice. But I was struggling off and on after about 13 miles. I was feeling pretty spent. Sometimes I picked it up, sometimes I was draggin'. After 17 miles I was feeling it pretty good, although my last two miles weren't bad. I even ran mile 20 in 8:48 and had a nice kick the last half-mile.

I made it a point to weigh myself before and after. I was 207.5 pounds before the run. I probably drank about 50 ounces of sports drink and water during the run and just after. I weighed 201.0 when I got home.

Tons of people out running today. Probably many training for the Akron Marathon and the half and relays.

Anyway, as I said, I should be happy with my first 60-mile week, actually 60.1 miles:

WEEK TOTALS
Running: 60.1 milesTime: 9h 08m 09sAvg. Pace: 9:07/mile MONTH TOTALS
Running: 168.6 milesTime: 1 day, 36m 08sAvg. Pace: 9:08/mile YEAR TOTALS
Running: 1140.0 milesTime: 6 days, 21h 36m 22sAvg. Pace: 8:58/mile

Yes, I'm convinced that hot and/or humid days slow you down. And your pace also should improve as you keep running, at least to a point. I don't do any speedwork per se, and my PRs are getting better simply based on the miles I've put in. I'm basically the same weight as I was 3 years ago when I ran my first marathon.
I did it!! My first ever 5 mile run - without stopping no less!! Woohoo!! Am feeling pretty dang . . .Invincible, yeah, that's the word.

Had a lovely thought at 2 1/2 miles (you know, that whole turning around point) "Hmmm. . .now all I have to do is run home."

and, yeah, Kini - the casual 3 mile mention - nicely done. Very nicely done.

today, I feel I have earned my beer.

As soon as I can sit down I'll be making a more coherent post....but let me say that I can totally recommend the Beer Mile to anyone wanting to experience a unique combination of competition and stupidity.

I'm heading out to the Buffalo Beer Fest. Perhaps I could have planned a better timing - really. Do I need to abuse my liver and my brain so soon again? Apparently, the answer is Yes!

Thanks to Maccabeth, kp, McTortle, Mandaroo......
Hi, Hi, Everyone!

I've lurked a bit but have been pretty busy. Teaching starts this week--my other work has also kept me on my toes.

Looks like you guys are training up a storm and some impressive racing as well!

I'm blaming the vertigo on DrChris--must be internetagious.

Went to see my own doc yesterday and she did this crazy head tilting stuff to get the rocks in my vestibular system in the right place--it was like being on a Tilt-o-Whirl and I puked right on her office floor in a big way--so embarrassed. (Is that TMI? Is there such a thing with this group?) I hope it helps resolve this as this is my third bout with it. Sigh.

I can run, though--I just can't bend over. It has had an impact, though--I notice my fatigue is more pronounced and even 5 miles is a major effort.

KJ- happy moving..if that's possible!

S MN Peeps--Everyone dry and OK?? Holy monsoon for you!

Solar-- I feel your pain. Drinks before the party help.

Litch- nice running! I saw your other post, and agree--just a bit slower, maybe, but 11 is still 11...

Tortle-- YEA!!!!!!!!!!

Maria- Top Chef. I'm disgusted at this point.

Stay cool those in the "easy" part of the US!
