Good Morning,

Well, I guess I'll try to get this started. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone else is running today. Sound like everyone had a great weekend of running around here!

I've got an easy 6 planned in a little while. I'm a little tired/fatigued right now. I'll have to see if this plan is going to be okay with NO days off at all. I'm sure it'll work itself out, I went through something like this last time a couple of weeks into the schedule.

PTom and Pacer have me all riled up about getting in my tempo runs to build speed/strength. The first one of this schedule is this week, I'm already nervous. It's not fun to hurt that bad when you aren't racing in my opinion!

Question of the day (for fun, I guess):

What got you into running competively and racing?

I've always run a little, my best friend growing up was a VERY competitive cross county racer so she got me started a little. Racing began on a whim last November when I decided it would be fun to check out the local Turkey Trot. I had way more fun than I thought and kept going.

I plan to run tonight sometime. Whether it is when I first arrive to my sister's in the evening or after midnight to celebrate the New Year will depend on how much drinking I feel like doing when I get there. I'm leaning toward midnight though, I think a short run will be fun even if I have indulged a bit. She lives in the house where we grew up, so I know the streets like the back of my hand and it is a safe neighborhood.

QOD- It was the thought of competing a race that got me running in the 1st place. I wanted to see if I could learn how to run, and so I chose a goal race and started c25k. I was inspired to start running because of a good friend who, like me, had lost a lot of weight. He started running and I was at his first HM to cheer him on. Took me a few months before I decided to try it myself though.

Good morning everyone!
It's questionable whether I will run today or not. I slept through my alarm, so that kind makes getting one in that much harder.
I will be doing pilates in about 20 minutes.
QOD: My trainer got me started. I was so not a runner growing up. I played sports, but running was not my thing. I actually did not star running until I was in my 30's. At first, I kind of just did it,but didn't feel any love for it. Then, I noticed how it was helping me. It helped me clear my head and play better soccer. Now I love it. It is my ME TIME.

No more running for 2007 for me. Whomever stole my running mojo, please give it back. I had a 13 and a 7 on the sced for the weekend, bagged the 13 and the 7 ended up at 6.5 Just not into it for the last 2 weeks. I am chalking it up to the holidays. I had been running 27-30 mpw consistently, but the last two weeks I had 17 and 18. Bah.

Final totals for 2007: 978 miles, in 7 days, 13 hours.

WTG ultraNettie!!!!! Will be reading your RR soon

Welcome Corrade - where in Western MA are you? I am just south of you!

QOD - In my current incarnation as a runner, my racing is a mental trick I use to get off my ass. I sign up for races, and then the fear of total embarrassment keeps me on task. I did run track in HS, and was fairly mediocre. I was a good strategic team runner by my senior year, however

i dunno. i don't consider myself a competitive runner. at all. i run races (and i dont' use the term racing because, damn I'm slow) to give me goal distances.

Howdy folks.

No running yesterday. However, I did spend a total of two hours and 52 minutes (not all at once) on my bike trainer yesterday, during another Stargate SG-1 marathon watching session. Man, my boo-tay was aching yesterday. Either I gotta get used to the seat, or I gotta find a padded cover. Oof!

Will hit the TM tonight. All I need is less than 2 to hit 450 for the year. Guess I'll just go for whatever I feel like going at the time. I have some new shoes to test out (Complete with funky laces), so two miles just won't cut it, I'm sure.

Qod: I got into running as a fitness / try to lose weight thing. Little did I know that the weight loss would be 80% diet, and 20% fitness.

I'll never be a competitive runner. Some folks are blessed with speed, some not, and some are in the middle. I'm in the "not" category, but that's okay. Slow and steady will get me there, and as long as someone at the finish line has saved a banana / water for me, I'm happy.

I have a 5k race tonight. Not sure if I'll race it or not. I did weights and an hour on the bike last night at the gym. I was going to go and then do 30 min run but my arm and hip are super sore from the fall Ick.

I need some mojo too!

QOD: I am a goal orientated person & competitive by nature.

Kris - I'm thinking of doing the same thing! I have had no luck finding a NYE race near me, so I'm thinking of doing my own 5k after midnight. I'll be at my friend's bar for the NYE celebration, but I'll probably head home shortly after and head out for my run. I just really like the idea of starting the new year that way...

QOD: I was always athletic growing up, and did run a bit just for exercise, until the summer of '06 when I went to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, to watch the Ironman Triathlon with a friend. It was so inspiring. I saw people who looked like they had no business completing 140+ miles come across that line with huge smiles on their faces. When I got home to NJ, I promptly went to my local running store, got fitted for shoes, and signed up for my first half marathon. Haven't looked back...

Off from running today, technically, so I'm about to try out my new bike trainer. Hope I set it up right!!! If not, I'm likely to pedal my way right into my television...

I'm taking a lazy day. Things get intense again tomorrow.

2007 turned out to be a good year for me fitness wise. Made some real progress and closed it out strongly with a 27 mile week 2 weeks ago and a new 5K PR yesterday.

No running for me today. I did do 40 minutes of pilates and 40 minutes of cardio/strength training this morning.

Qod I have never entered a race. I think about it, just haven't made the move. I started running as a way to lose weight.

I'm planning to head out for 6-8 miles soon and then I'm taking the rest of the year off.

QOD - I was always into sports as a kid - my favorite sport was whatever was in season (baseball, basketball, football, tennis, swimming). I played 3 sports in high school (volleyball, basketball, tennis) and took up golf in college but was never good enough at any of them to consider playing in college. I missed competition after high school, and my dad was a runner when I was a young lad and I joined him at several races. I told him I'd run a marathon before turning 25, he reminded me of this when I was at my heaviest, and I'm still going now almost 13 years later. I couldn't imagine NOT having something to train for (I' going nuts without having my spring goal marathon picked yet!). I just love the idea of challenging myself physically and I've met a lot of friends through running so I could never give it up.

Morning all,

My kids gave me their cold...isn't that nice? I'm the last one in my immediate family to have it.

I got out for a good 17 miler yesterday. That wraps the year for me. No run today, scheduled rest day.

Year end totals: 1,671.0 miles 238:04:01 (9 days, 22 hrs)
That's about 1,050 miles more than I ran last year!!!!

QOD: - I've always been competitive and into sports. I ran track in Jr. High and played Soccer on various travel teams. I always ran in the background of my sports. After college I started racing motorcycles, and ran for training. I did a few running races (mostly 5Ks) each year just the hell of it. A few years ago, I did my first HM, then this year my first marathon, plus 3 more.

Hey all - may sneak over to the gym after work today, or more likely early morning NYD tomorrow. It feels weird anticipating a doctor's appt, but that's what I'm doing - I just want to get this toe thing taken care of already.

QOD: Because I got tired of running around the same old streets over & over again. Picking out a race gave me some motivation to keep doing what I was doing, as I still hadn't quite truly discovered the love of running for running's sake at that time.

Hey runners! I am feeling great today! My hammies are still a bit tight and my right ankle is telling me that I will likely not be running at all this week, but hey, it's been a super year for me!

QOD: I was never into sports because I typically sucked at them and was too embarrassed to even try most of the time. I started doing aerobics in HS to lose weight and I tried out for track, went to one meet and quit, but when I became a Junior, I would go to the Y with my dad in the morning to do a short run on their track and lift weights.

When I got to college, I was friends with a girl who was a runner and occassionally I would attempt to run with her, though not consistently. When I dropped out of college in 1999, I was depressed and weighed more than I had in a while and when I came back home to Chicago, I eventually started back to running again. Once I figured out that all sorts of people ran races, I ran my first race, a 10K in 2000 and followed that up with my first 5K (backwards, I know!). Started training for a half-marathon, got injured, started weightlifting with the goal to come back to running and a couple of years later, I trained for and completed my first half in 2004.

Shortly, after that I found coolrunning and was infected with crazy goals by the 30s group and now, I can't stop.

(That was too damn long. I am so sorry. )
