Good Morning my Fellow Runners,

I don't often start the thread, mostly because I am still sleeping when you are all so industriously moving along with your daily days. However, today I have a purpose in posting first.

We have been having a little identity crisis. I've been watching it happen for some time. There really is too much information for everybody to take in everyday all the time. It was bound to happen that some if not all of us would just get a little tired of having to read through everything to get to the information that is really important.

Now by really important I don't solely mean running information. That is important. After all it is what we all came here for in the first place. But we kept coming back for other reasons. I mean life events too. Births, deaths, illness, new jobs, milestones and celebrations, along with all of our running questions, battles, weaknesses, strengths and achievements. These are the things that make us work well together as a group.

So, this is my proposition. I would ask that when you have something running related or news worthy like the events I listed above, that you use our new icon that Rich was kind enough to work on and add to the smilies list.
It looks like this:
You will find it on the right of the posting screen. It's quite hard to miss.

This way, if you only have time to skim the thread to gather the important information these icons will guide you toward that information. Likewise, I would ask that you only use this icon for the kind of information that is newsworthy to the whole group.

I hope that this will make it easier for those of you who just want the facts, while allowing others to enjoy each others company. I think our comfort as 30's is in our sense of community. In two separate threads, I think that we will lose that sense of community.

We can try this for a couple of days and then decide as a group whether we should stick with it or go to 2 threads.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Thanks, Winter! I didn't like reading 2 threads since basically you still have the same amount of posts, it's just divided into 2 threads! Actually, it's more, probably since we did a total of 19 pages (on 30 post/page setting) yesterday!

Well, I've got nothing important to say, so I'll refrain from using that symbol for now. If I remember right, my schedule calls for two straight days off. So no run today or tomorrow. I'll hit the Y this evening for some easy lifting, but that'll be it.

Maria, you asked about the Vermont City Marathon yesterday. Did you see my link to my write-up about my race there?

Well, too bad it's not Friday. Have a great day, everyone...

I'll try any combination, though I have enjoyed the running thread for it's continuity of running discussion - and the fun thread cause the nonstop stream of conversation there is hysterically funny.

And I usually just post in the quick reply, so for the moment, pretend my running icon is here.

No run last night, felt sick to my stomach. It was strange, very crampy sharp pains that did eventually go away. Now that means I have to run 5 tonight after work.

And now, I have to go quick like bunny to work.

Have a good day and good runs, all!

Anyway.. Morning!

I ran 4.29 last night and used my fun new watch to record splits (ok, I forgot for the first mile, but I figured it out from my total time on nike+ minus the splits total time...) It's interesting to see how fast overall I am running each mile, versus pace at any given moment (on the nike+). I need to run again tonight, but not sure if it will happen due to tutoring after school until 5:30 (sun sets at 5:45...). I may have to TM it. But I don't wanna.

We are in the computer lab today with my classes, so it means I can guilt-free surf the net! They already know how to do the activities (online French language/grammar games) so they won't have many questions.

OK, gotta get ready for work (even though I'd rather go back to sleep right now).

Ciao.

Morning, everyone.

Got in 3.5 last night on the TM, with 3.0 being run straight (my post-bench LR for now.)

I do have two running questions, so I guess I should use this:

Quesiton 1: As mentioned somewhere on one of yesterday's threads, there was a point made about "serious" runners, vs recreational. To you, wherein lies the actual difference? I'm curious.

Question 2: If my ankle holds up, I am planning on increasing my mileage run each week, by 1/2 a mile. and then .75 miles later on down the line. Although doing so will get me up to running 13 miles by March 30, for the GA ING, I've never worried about tapering, etc. For those that are much more skilled and 'in the know', can you guys review my schedule, as far as when I'm increasing miles. how I'm increasing them, and .. well.. anything else that you see might be beneficial.. please feel free to throw in there.

Current schedule: (Date listed is the Sunday where I start the 'new' week, and the amount is obviously the amount i want to physically run that week, per workout.)

11/4 - 2.5
11/11 3.0
11/18 - 3.5
11/25 - 4.0
12/2 - 4.5
12/9 - 5.0
12/16 - 5.5
12/23 - 6.0
12/30 - 6.75 (Increasing distance .75 per week now, rather than .50)

1/6 - 7.50
1/13 - 8.25
1/20 - 9.0
1/27 - 9.75

2/3 - 10.5
2/10 - 11.25
2/17 - 12.0
2/24 - 12.75

3/2 - 13.50. Remain there.
Week of 3/30 - taper, somehow.

Technically, I'm a week ahead of schedule. IE, I'm running 3.0 this week, instead of 2.5. I built that safeguard into the plan, in case I get the flu or something, and am out of running for a few days or a week.

As the schedule stands, my weekly pattern is as follows:
Mon - off
Tue - Yoga
Wed / Thurs - run
Fri - Off
Sat/Sun - run.

Again, any suggestions or guidance on how to tweak things, or move forward, would be very much appreciated. I do have to train clients today, so I may not be able to see responses until after 7 tonight, but I certainly welcome any suggestions.

Thanks! (and my apologies for being so long winded!)

Good morning!

Winter, I like the icon idea! Thanks!

(((Noni))) Glad you are feeling better.

Hi Beth, Bob, Mandy and Ailarie! Have a great day!

Nice pics, Larry!

Got up early this morning to try and get 7.5 miles in. Just as I was about to leave, I checked on DS. He was scrunched up in one corner of his bed with his knees drawn up under him. I thought maybe he wasn't feeling well, so I went in to him and he whispered, "Something's wet". He was soaked from his armpits to his socks with pee. He isn't quite night-trained yet so he has been wearing a pull-up at night. He might as well have been wearing nothing for all the good it did last night. Oh well, I got him undressed and gave him a wash, got some new jammies and put him in our bed with DH. Luckily he went back to sleep or I would have had to bag my run altogether. I ended up only having time to get 5 miles done. I think I'll be going on the treadmill later.

Oh, yes, I just checked yesterday's thread and saw that Doc dropped in. Hey, Doc! Good to see ya! Hope all is well!

Back to the grindstone! Will check in later.

Good morning everyone!

No run today. I wound up sleeping in. It was nice. DD2 has strep, so she is home once again. Thank goodness she'll be back in school tomorrow.

Ailarie I think I am in between recreational and serious. I don't have quite the discipline of some serious runners. But, I take my distances and times seriously, and am trying to improve them. That may just be my competitive spirit. Good luck with the trianing for your half!

LL Great pictures!!! Congrats, again!

Brandy I bought Live in Anguilla. It has some oldies, but goodies on it. I just started watching the DVD. Hopefully, I'll finish it today.

Buenos Dias!
My predicament today is I have 5 miles to run and nowhere to drop the kiddos off. Have to pick DH up at the airport at 4:30. Looks like I will be running in the dark. The good news is that I just found a woman who does in-home childcare where I can drop them off and then go run, and she's CHEAP!! Looks like I'll be getting my runs in with no worries starting next week.

It's hard to miss those green gloves Larry! Great pics. I especially love the one up against that blue wall. Very Hollywood-ish!

Noni, honestly I think running is running.

Good morning!

Worked til 7:30 last night (after getting in at 8am) and then worked on stuff for my class until after 1 a.m. Other than posting yesterday a.m. before leaving for work, I did not read either of the threads all day. So, if I missed anything important, I hope to chime in sometime this evening. No run yesterday, today is doubtful. Did get in a nice rapid walk yesterday, going way across campus for a lunch mtg.

Ailairie- a serious runner is someone who spends $100s to go to races across the country and run 11:00-12:00 miles (or 13:00 or 15:00...). It sure isn't about the winning and public accolades.

I actually think a runner is a runner, regardless of interest in competition, etc. I have no need for any other labels or distinctions. For a long time Maples was not interested in signing up for races. Some people might say that made him a recreational runner but I would argue that he was a serious runner with his dedication to improving his running and challenging himself to go further every day.

Honestly, I preferred having the 2 daily threads, developing a continuity of running discussion that I found easier over trying to spot the icon way that'll be used in this experiment.

We're just going to have to face the fact that if we have discussion daily that's up near 400 posts, it's going to be some work keeping up with it all. Having two threads isn't going to reduce that amount, having an icon to mark within a post isn't going to reduce that either.

I vote for 2 threads.

Good morning all! Well you Northerners would be proud of me. Got up this morning for ohr w10d2 and it's 30 degrees and I had to scrape frost off my car windshield (and side and back windows) just so that I could drive to the park. I made it just fine in my run and my body temp at the end of my 3 miles was I suppose perfect- wasn't cold wasn't hot.

So today was another "little victory" in my fledgling running career. Not scared of the cold even to the point of spending 10 minutes scraping ice off my windshield.

Cross trained last night even though I didn't want to do it. heh. But I am in the midst of the most productive workout streak in my life- running and cross training without missing a single day.

Well that's all I have time for before work. I'll check in at lunchtime and see how everyone is doing.

Good day all.

thanks for the mention Kris.

Morning. Planning for another easy-going run this evening and some core work. Trying to gauge when my legs will be ready for a speed workout; me thinks it'll be over the weekend.

Single thread with usage ...not so much for me. I appreciate the efforts Winter, really! But just the couple days having the running/workout thread back took me back to the CR days. I like it.

Ailarie - I'm a bit confused by your schedule. Are you saying your weekly mileage will amount to the number you've posted for each week? I ask b/c your post says both that and mentions "each workout"

Hello all,

Ok, good start. If you are going to post your run, bike or swim, whether you have done it or not, that should have the icon. Maybe even if you are having a day off.

I'm not trying to police things, maybe I didn't explain it properly the first time. Basically anything you would have posted in yesterdays running thread should have the icon, or anything Big that is life related.

I'm going out for 5 k this morning then I'm going on an Interview with a Big HR Company today. Wish me luck!

Or if you prefer, if you want to look at some early evidence that having two separate threads was helping enable further discussion, both fun stuff and running oriented stuff, just look at the number of posts --

Yesterday, 2 threads a total of 563 posts.
2 days ago, 2 threads a total of 461 posts.
Monday, 432 posts.

Notice the steady increase, although that could just be random variation anyhow.

Last week --

Friday, 353 posts
Thursday, 420 posts
Wednesday, 353 posts
Tuesday, 396 posts
Monday, 367 posts

It looks to me that indicates having two separate threads was making it easier for us to find what we wanted to talk about and respond. If we're all invested here in about discussion, especially with regard to running, I see the early increase in the number of posts as encouraging and a good thing.

I really liked the separate threads. I honestly don't read much of what people write when it's all lumped in together. It just looks like too much and I end up just skimming.

I will just watch today and see how it all plays out.
